Stayed for a week in february. Lots of snow, good skiing conditions but simply too crowded on the slopes. If you are going for a skiing vacation in Bad Gastein try to avoid the weeks 7, 8 and 9, where for instance the Danes and the Swedes have school holidays for the winterbreak.
Accomodation is pretty basic and the location is pretty much off the center of the city, which will take you 15 to 20 minutes by walking. The route to the little hotel parking space is narrow, steep and in winter conditions very icey, so to be on the safe side bring your snowchains for your vehicle to be able to make the clime up to the hotel.
We were four persons and had a five persons appartment, glad we weren´t five! The equipment for cooking and dining leaves lots of space for improvement, and even for four people the space was tiny and the bathroom very small.
The best thing about the Chalet Gastein is the staff very serviceminden and very helpful.
Skiing area in Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein is very good if not this crowded, but best skiing while we were there was absolutely in Sportsgastein.
There are some options for the after skiing, but again to many danish high school students around in week 7. Skibus stop is wthin five minutes of walking distance.More
