The Centro Cultural is located in the sprawling complex of the former Convento San Francisco. There are several lovely interior courtyards with ample opportunity to sit in the shade and linger. The museum houses five different collections; I found the two large galleries with Nicaraguan primitivist paintings very interesting. There also is a collection of large pre-Columbian stone figures from nearby Isla Zapatera--unfortunately most of them are seriously eroded. Overall, a worthwhile place to spend a couple of hours.

There were some interesting displays illustrating traditions and ceremonies of Nicaragua, but the highlight was the primitive art. The details of each piece of art and the variety were outstanding. I could have spent hours examining each piece. The replicas of the archeological monuments were also interesting, although the label copy could have been more detailed. Especially lacking were the dates of carving.

The architecture of the former convent, with various courtyards and large rooms plus a view of the volcanos outside, is enjoyable in itself. The pre-Columbian art, grand statues and pottery both, was a very nice exhibit. I've seen extensive exhibits in Cusco, Lima and Mexico City but this was unique to the region. Also, the arte primitivo, earlier 20th century but also flourishing after the Sandinista revolucion, gave some wonderful views of la vida Nicaraguense. So between the lovely setting, the solitude (no crowds) and the art, this was a great surprise. (And who can complain about $5?, very petty)

This is quite a small cultural centre but well worth the visit. You get a snapshot of Nicaraguan history along with information on local skills and customs. There are rooms of religious iconography as well as other art forms and painting styles.

All exhibits have explanations in both English and Spanish which is great. It is not extensive but is bigger than you think from the outside. There is a small gift shop that was closed when I was there - no missed opportunity though!
For the couple of dollars entry fee I would recommend a visit to this centre because it does fill in some missing elements that Lonely Planet and the like do not tell you.

Come and learn of Nicaragua´s culture and history, you can visit the museum yourself but a guide will show you even better about all the artifacts in the museum.
