This park is great for boaters , picnics, and those who enjoy cabins. I'm writing as a hiker. Most of this area of va and Nc are pretty flat. However this has some unique areas to walk around Kerr lake. We took the pan handle loop trail . It had plenty of markers but distance was often unknown because length of trails were not always posted. This is a great trail for horses .

I am glad you enjoyed hiking at Occoneecchee State Park. Thank you for taking time to complete a review to let potential visitors know about the trails. We will look at the trail mileage markers. Our trail systems tend to have a variety of spurs that can make mileage calculations challenging for hikers,

We decided to hike around the park in the early afternoon. The tree cover kept the park very cool for the time of day and the pathways were well maintained making it an easy 'hike'. We did not see all of the park since we are not as outdoorsy as most are. We appreciate the beauty of the park but deiced after our quick hike around a trail that it was enough for us. There are plenty of trail options that are half a mile or one mile long and are able to be completed within 10-15 minutes or longer 10+ mile hikes if that is your interest.

Occoneechee Park and Buggs Island Lake are a little known treat in Southside, Virginia. 50,000 acres of freshwater lake, with record size catfish, and stripers, crappie, and chain pickerel abound. The park has beautiful cabins on the lake. Clarksville, Virginia is the only town in Southside built on the lake, just across the bridge from Occoneechee Park. There are several good restaurants, including the Lamplighter, home of the original ribeye, the Lakehouse, and Coopers Landing, the last also a bed and breakfast. Clarksville Marina offers boat rentals at a reasonable price. History is all around if not overt. Prestwould Plantation is a remarkable part of antebellum history, as well as the Boyd Tavern in nearby Boydton, the county seat. A relaxing, understated gem of Southside Virginia just a little south of Richmond. If you are a sportsman, November is great for fishing and hunting. Several game preserves available.

Immaculate and spacious cabins for a great price. Walking trails, boat rentals nearby. Go in to the town of Clarksville for some shopping and dining.
