Just wanted to write a short update, as we returned for dinner again the other night - 1st time back since my Feb. 2017 review. The place was packed - surprised for a Thursday night, but we were happy to see they are getting business. With only one sushi chef, it took a while for our sushi to be prepared and served. The waiter brought us a couple free bowls of Miso soup as an apology for the wait. Very nice. When the sushi finally arrived, it was soooooo worth it. I was concerned that new ownership and a new, larger menu, might reduce the quality. Not true. This place is amazing. The fish SO fresh, no overwhelmingly fishy (which happens when the fish is old and has been sitting around for a while), and the combination of flavors in the various rolls is a treat for your taste buds. And the presentation - which is 50% of the sushi experience - is perfect. I've said it before - we've eaten sushi all over Canada and the U.S. We seek out a sushi restaurant every time we're traveling somewhere ... .but nothing we've come across in any major city (Boston, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Toronto, Las Vegas, Montreal, NYC, Halifax ... ) have come close to what's here in little old Rutland VT.

The food was really great and fresh, as usual. The service was friendly and prompt. Best Sushi around. The place had a mini makeover but still needs a new floor. It has Comfy booths and atmosphere.

We had a horrible experience at this restaurant. There were 6 of us (3 of which were pre-teens). We had a few appetizers, 2 sushi orders and 2 kitchen orders (udon noodles). The food was ok but the service was ridiculously slow and beyond frustrating. We had a 6:30 dinner reservation and most Japanese places are quick. We expected to be out of there by 7:30/8pm. But it took 30-45 minutes just to get water to the table. We watched as our sushi orders sat ready to go on the counter top for 10 minutes. When I pointed it out to the server he said they wanted to bring the udon noodles out with the sushi. This is understandable, but the udon order was taken at 6:50pm and it was now past 8pm. Unacceptable. The only thing they were quick about was giving us the check.

I've reviewed Tokyo House a number of times. We've been coming here since it first opened over 10 years ago, and it's our favorite place to eat in Rutland. Several ownership changes, within the family it seems, have occurred in that time and fortunately the quality has always stayed consistent. In early 2017, ownership changed again. Not sure if it's a relative or not this time, but it's resulted in a much expanded menu, with many more items. Dozens of different sushi roll options, more appetizers, more hot entrees ..... That's not always a good thing, necessarily.

We have eaten there only once, last week, since the new ownership took over, and there's a couple things worth noting.

First - the don't have their act together on service yet. It was President's Day weekend, and all the out-of-staters were swarming down the mountain from their ski chalets for dinner, and Tokyo House clearly wasn't prepared for it. Line ups at the door waiting for takeout orders, more people waiting for tables, all the seating was full - and there was only one waiter. It was pretty crazy. Our sushi took forever. Hopefully we'll see improvement on future visits on non-holiday weekends.

Second - prices have gone up on most sushi and rolls, although some seemed to have gone down a bit. We ordered the tuna martini for an appetizer. Interesting presentation in a martini glass with an LED light in the bottom, but for $12.95, I'd rather not have the light and get more spicy tuna in the glass. There was literally about a tablespoon and a half of tuna and the rest was filler. Maybe $4 worth of fish. Way overpriced. You're better off ordering the avocado bowl for $8. Was more flavorful and a better value. The rest of the new sushi rolls are equally expensive - the older original rolls (left column on sushi roll menu page) are $8-$9 and reasonable, and all excellent. The new rolls at $11-$13 on the right column I think are too much money. We tried the Hot Girl and the Super Nova roll. Both were adequate, Super Nova better - but not sure they are worth the price.

Hopefully this place doesn't go down hill by trying to do too much without enough staff and too high of a price point for Rutland.

I've included photos of the new menu.

While the food was acceptable (not great), the service was soooo bad I would never, ever come back. It took almost 45 minutes for water to come to the table. The food didn't come out for an hour and fifteen minutes (2 sushi orders and two yaki udon (stir fried noodles). For perspective, this is a small restaurant and there were only 3 other 4 tops being served. Add to this that we had 3 kids at the table waiting for their food. Terrible experience.
