Owner description: Nearly 4,000 acres of sand dunes with activities including "surfing", camping, hiking, picnicking and bird and wildlife watching.

Most of the dunes, at least the south 2/3rds of the park, are covered in an ugly dense vegetation. Only 2 areas are reasonably clear and they are pretty spectacular.

Visited Oct 8, 2017; Park entry is $4.00 per adult and sledding disk rental is $2.50 per disk for up to 2 hours and you are provided wax to wax your sled. After stopping by the visitor center - oh by the way - you must have your drivers license and license plate to rent sledding disks - you drive a short distance to the sand hills. We arrived at 11 am and it was hard to slide down the sand even after heavy waxing. Recommend no shoes and sunscreen. They have picnic tables and grills to BBQ - NICE AREA. There are showers and restrooms. We showered off the sand from our feet before getting back on the road. Becareful of roadrunners! We saw 3 while driving inside the park. The sledding was about what I was expecting for "texas" sledding but if you really want to sand sled - head to Nambia in Africa - that's totally amazing!

We spent several months staying at Monahans Sandhills State Park and we miss it, greatly. We enjoyed the office staff, they are all super friendly. The whole family had a blast sliding down the dunes and going for long walks. We can't wait to visit again in the future. Monahans also has some good restaurant choices. Great area!

The wife and I took a try at the sand sledding. Didn't have good luck with getting any speed - it is not like sledding on snow. Just another item checked o the Texas Bucket List. The park ranger suggested that winter time the sand might be more cooperative or in the morning. We were there in the hottest part of the afternoon. The geography was something new. Overall something good to try if you are passing through. The museum on site was educational.

I have always wanted to see these dunes. We arrived around sunset, but the visitor center was closed and really the dunes weren't much. Little kids might enjoy sliding down them, but there is not much for adults to do.
