“Probably the best of the Spring Hotels...but not THE best in Tenerife.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2012

We have now stayed in every Spring Hotel on the island.

I like the Arona Gran (good food, good service, but too far away from anything) but was not impressed by the Bitaccora, (large creepy insects, crap food, children showing off on the dance floor with laughing, adoring parents) so we thought we would try the Hotel Vulcano this time.

Didn't get off to a good start when on arrival for pick up, tired and hungry after a five hour flight - the Viajes Urbis driver did not recognise the hotel we were staying in. "Vuwlcannah? " We nodded....yes, the Hotel Vulcano. " No, I do not know Vuwlcanah? Mi no comprende." Then a light went off.....Ah! You means El VOOOLCANO!" That's what I said! We arrived at midnight, and because we had missed a meal, we got a stamp on our room key which gave us a free poolside meal to use at our leisure. Our room was lovely; slightly old fashioned like all of the Spring Hotels rooms....but really spacious and clean and with a massive balcony (we were on the ground floor, Room 167) Huge flat screen telly, hubby settled down to watch a repeat of some ITV2 sport thing, I wobbled off to try the WiFi. Didn't work in the lobby, but a kind man told me to try the bar area where I got a great connection - on 'Default' don't even attempt the 'Free Mundo'. After emailing home and checking facebook I retired for the night, and found a very comfortable bed, was out like a light, felt like being at home. Woke the next morning to that lovely Tenerife ambiance...opened the curtains... 8am sunshine....ahh, this is what we want! On with the short skirt I would not be seen dead in at home and off down to brekkie - food was wonderful on the first day - breakfast was superb. Same at night; grilled prawns, whole side of salmon, huge selection of lovely food. The salad was fresh, and the dessert selection was very good. Only complaints food wise throughout the whole holiday would be that almost every chicken dish smells and tastes like my mothers Boxing day kitchen - ie, poultry that has been boiled to hell and back, for soup. Must be a Spanish thing, cos loads of peeps were tucking in like it was their last meal. Boak. After a week, the food tends to be a bit 'samey' (you would kill for a quick Marks and Sparks ready meal, or a Maccy D) but better than a lot of hotels I have experienced. I noticed there were NO chocolate hob nobs, or bits and pieces with the icecream/desert like there used to be. And, no tea pots at breakfast - make it in the cup. They seem to be making cut backs... no maple syrup whippy cream pancakes at breakfast either! How very dare they. As for the entertainment: The hotel is FULL of very old people who seem to live for getting their pale blue stay press polyester trousers on and showing off their 'dancing' of an evening (if you could call it 'dancing'...'shuffling very quickly' comes to mind) we had a better laugh watching their antics than at the 'real' entertainment. Just wish the Bar staff found it all so funny - they never cracked a smile and were totally miserable - especially the big guy who looks like Joe Calzage, and his two female blonde 'bouncers' (one hair up with glasses, one hair down, black bra under white blouse. Observant? Moi?) Just remember the old joke...don't put your drink down at the bar, or someone WILL drop their false teeth in it.

To conclude: my hubbie loves Spring Hotels because of the price, the comfy beds and the good food. I concur....BUT, I did go look at other hotels in the area that came up for a similar price when we booked (H10, Villa Cortez, Mare Nostrum etc) and, after two years and four holidays in Spring Hoteles, I think we will try something else for our next week in May.

Can't wait!

Dear Madam,

Thank you so much for staying in our three hotels and for your review of your stay in our Spring Hotel Vulcano.

We take on board all comments, both positive and negative. We receive the monthly customer satisfaction questionnaires from all major UK Tour Operators, and monitor the monthly scores in each area. We consistently score above average in the food /food quality sections with the UK Tour Operators but we take the appropriate action whenever necessary.

Clearly there are some things that we can’t change, and is the fact that we are a hotel popular for the older clientele as it is as you say very comfortable, brilliant location and the clients feel at home. Also, it is a matter of personal taste as you are obviously younger than them.

We are very sorry to hear that you will not be coming back in May, but after your experience in the hotels you mention, should you decide to return, we will be willing to welcome you with open arms.

Best Regards

This has got to be the best hotel we have stopped in. The food was amazing, so much choice, I don't know how anybody could complain about it, If we did have anything negative to say regarding the restaurant, it was that some evenings there wasn't much choice in vegetables, but you could always put salad with your meal.
Most of the staff were very friendly, the rooms were clean in fact overall it was a lovely weeks holiday & for the price, exceptional value.
We didn't spend many evenings in the bar although there was entertainment on every evening, as we found a bar round the corner called La Karina that had live music on, 6 out of 7 evenings it was "little Joe", who was brilliant, he played all kinds of music, but a lot of country & he did it really well. The staff there were really friendly.

We stayed in the hotel Vulcano for one week. We were a party of five of mixed age and the general concensus was that we all had a lovely holiday. My husband and I had a corner room and although the view was of the pathway leading up to the front entrance it was very spacious with a super duper king size bed. Apparently the rooms are smaller toward the middle of the rows of rooms. This was evident because we went to the others' rooms and saw this for ourselves. We were next door to the enterntainment, which wasn't a problem for us, as it finished at midnight.

The food was varied with decent offerings every night. This hotel offered good stews, such as chicken and duck, cooked well and falling off the bone. So really, they were better at food cooked for a crowd. Food cooked on the grill was a bit more hit and miss. You can't state how you want it cooked as they tended to have 15-20 pieces on at any one time. It would probably take until midnight to serve everybody anyway if they did offer this. Thought had also been given to those of us who follow a healthy diet. The breakfast was also varied. Our party was happy with the food served. You have to use your common sense. For example, I never go for pasta that's been sitting for a while - ever!

We went down to the main "strip" most nights. This was enjoyable enough, but drinks are quite pricey at 8 euro for a gin and tonic. Which was okay for us as we were only having a couple anyway. The enterntainment at one of the bars on the corner next to the Mare Nostrum was a good laugh. Two brothers on the key board and guitar with a bit of comedy at the weekend. Not bad. Entertainment at the hotel was typical but always proved popular with a packed bar every night. We met people who were staying for 3 months!

Tenerife was laid back and the locals were all pleasant. Weather was pleasant with a couple of overcast days but there is plenty to do. Even taking the local bus up to Santa Cruz wasn't a problem. The 110 at the bus station, is direct, and takes 50 mins. Did a big bit of shopping as there were sales on in the high st stores such as Zara and Bershka. Prices were fab.

There really would have to be something wrong with you not to get something out of the hotel. It is well run with decent standards. As with any business, somebody will be let down by the service when it runs short of expectations. This certainly was not our experience at the Vulcano.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are larger!

After a very quick reception -- "Here is your key, this is your room number "-- we were in our room. Room was OK but no info re hotel, facilities or area. At reception we were told it was going to be replaced and would not be available for a few days. It never materialised and we had to find out for ourselves . This took us the best part of our hols. and info had to be squeezed out of them.
The restaurant was canteenish with food being left uncovered and unused food brought out
again next day, partic salad meats. Strongly recommend hotel manager (if there is one) to
install hand disinfecting bottles at entrance of restaurant.
The entertainment was usually quite good and the animacion team kept those who wanted it
well entertained.
