I'm really surprised by some of the reviews of this hotel, as I personally think it's fantastic. Due to its recent refurbishment it's like a brand new hotel. Everywhere is modern and spotlessly clean.
The rooms are fantastic. Lovely decor, two massive beds (pushed together), two seater couch and coffee table, absolutely loads of storage space and plenty of coat hangers, full length mirror, safe (with no extra charge or deposit) three electric sockets, a fridge, large fan over the beds, and air conditioning. And the bathroom was lovely too, large mirror on the wall plus a small magnified mirror, hair dryer and a massive walk in shower with plenty of pressure. I really couldn't have been happier with the room. I think when they refurbished the rooms they got it spot on.
We were on the first floor, directly opposite the lifts, and our balcony was above the lounge bar. It was sometimes a little noisy late at night, one night until 3am with people drinking at the bar, but that's just luck of the draw I guess, and it didn't bother us too much. It might concern people who like to go to bed early or family's with children though.
We only had one issue with our room and that was the plumbing in our bathroom, resulting in a leak all over the floor. We had to report it to reception three times but it was resolved that day. They possibly didn't understand how bad it was at first.
Two large bottles of water in the room on arrival, and you can request more at the bar.
Pool towels are free and no deposit needed.
With regards to reserving sun beds, if you want to be sat somewhere specific then you do need to get up very early, we noticed people reserving beds as early as 6.30am. The way the hotel is shaped means that half the pool area get sun in the morning (which seem to be reserved first) and half in the afternoon. But there are plenty of beds, and large areas of shade.
There are two bars, the pool bar, which is also where the entertainment is on at night, and a lounge bar. There are also two self service areas, one by the pool and one at the dining area. Where you can help yourself to soft drinks, hot drinks, water, wine on tap, and beer. They have Amstel lager and Cruzcampo radler both on draft.
There are Riu drinks menus on both bars so you know what is available. The cocktails are really nice, not very strong as they are pre-made in bottles and then simply blended with ice, but enjoyable nonetheless.
The food is fantastic. The best I've had in an all inclusive hotel. There's loads to choose from at every meal time and it's always nice and fresh. Everything you could wish for at breakfast, hot and cold, eggs cooked every way possible, bacon, pastries, pancakes, cereal, fruit, cold meats and cheese, salad etc. And then at lunch and tea time there is always a very extensive salad bar, three different pasta dishes, about five different pizzas, garlic bread, meat dishes, roasted meat joints, fish, vegetables and loads more. As well as fruit, cakes, ice cream and cheese and crackers.
There are also two themed restaurants, one Spanish and one Asian which you have to book a table with at reception for either a 7pm or 9pm sitting. We went to the Asian one, and the food was lovely. The only thing I would say is, having stayed at lots of all inclusive hotels, themed restaurants usually offer table service, where you choose your food from a menu, which is a nice change from eating at the buffet for the rest of the holiday. But these are self service buffets just like the main restaurant. No big deal but just something we noticed.

The beach is a five to ten minute walk away, and just straight down one road. The hotel also offers a free shuttle bus. It's a lovely beach, we really enjoyed two days down there.

For those wanting to go out at night there are restaurants, bars and clubs within walking distance. We really liked the Yumbo centre, which is short taxi ride away (about 3 euros).
We didn't watch much of the evening entertainment at the hotel, but some nights they have professional acts on and some nights the animation team put on a show themselves.
Our experience of all the staff, reception, animation, cleaning, restaurant and bar, was very positive. They were all friendly and work very hard.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel as we had a great holiday. Compared to other four star hotels i have stayed in this is definitely higher end.

recently returned from a week at this hotel , its only a few weeks old and you can tell as everything Is brand new, modern , tidy , works as it should and no sign of damage or disrepair so this gave it a nice feeling , I saw some photos of what it looked like before the refurbishment and its an amazing transformation well done. food was acceptable to good for an all inclusive not the best I have ever had but certainly nothing to complain about either , tried the Asian restaurant which was nice as well for a more relaxed change still buffet style but less people in at once , food was always plentiful , the pool was overcrowded and you had to be up very early it seemed to grab a sunbed , many days we came down before 9 and it was a struggle to find a bed - always did I will note but not always in the nicest spot to spend the day , this action is fine if you really want to up at the crack of dawn but I was on holiday and didnt , Hotel STATE no reserving of Sunbeds then please be brave and enforce that I saw many days towels draped over sunbeds and no sign of people for literally hours expect as in the shade morning and sun later this was why and thats not acceptable Riu , bar service was on the whole good but can get very busy but if your on beer / wine self service helps this , - location is ok not great beach is 10 mins walk if you don't want bus service and there are local bus stops within a 2 min walk from hotel if you dont want to hire a car you can then see a little more of the island at a reasonable price and regular service Puerto de mogan was lovely - hotel wise you should not be disappointed and worth a visit while everything is so nice and new :) hope its kept up like that for many years - enjoy !

Room Tip: Higher floors give best views , garden view is better

The newly refurbished hotel is stunning. Check in was quick and easy. Theres free wifi in reception and around the pool area. Our room was spacious, modern and the bed was huge and comfortable. We had a garden view room which over looked the neighbouring hotel pool and had views down to the sea. Room was cleaned every day with fresh towels. Theres a card to leave on the bed when u want ur bed changed. We never had a problem getting a spot at the pool even at 1pm one day we jus moved sunloungers around to suit us. Entertainment staff are hard working and friendly, evening entertainment wasnt great bt not that bad either. Bar staff were really efficient amd friendly and there was a great selection of drinks including a little fizz!! Food was great, good selection at all times and snacks and drinks throughout the night. Japanese restraunt was lovely. Hotels an easy 10 min walk to beach. Its close to both Kasbah and Yumbo centres. Theres a great Irish bar called Mulligans near by too. Couldnt fault hotel or staff. Would definitely reccommend.

Just returned from a weeks stay here.

Ok the pros
Rooms very clean, great shower.
Hotel fully refurbished and modernised.
Staff friendly, polite and helpful.
Animation team work so hard and they try their very best.
Food was good standard and plentiful and restaurant staff very attentive.
Lovely pool.
The staff with the exception of the maids are all very nice.

As for the cons
Maids not so friendly, one in particular decided to throw our swim wear in the bathroom bin! Along with my nieces expensive face wash! When asked why she shrugged her shoulders and refused to apologise!!
Mould in my marmalade.
Chef in such a hurry he splashed hot oil on my 6 year old daughter.
No professional evening shows throughout our stay, just left to animation team.
Riu Papayas states 24hour all inclusive, however, no food to be found after dinner!
No jacuzzi either which is a shame.

I expected much more from the Riu.
