Being a self-proclaimed foodie and having an educated palate, I was so pleased with Treebeards. I've haven't lived in Houston long, and I've been seeking out Creole/Cajun/Southern food that will leave me wanting more. I was disappointed until I discovered Treebeards.
The blackened catfish with etouffee topping was out of this world. Moist and flaky with just the right amount of spice, it was hands down some of the best catfish I've ever had. The seafood gumbo is very good and I LOVED the crawfish etouffee. The only disappointment was the cabbage (needed more seasoning) and the jalapeno cornbread, which was dry. There is no need to buy bread, though. There are fresh slices of small pieces of baguette bread to add to your meal for free before you get to the register.
The portions are large and the prices are justifiable for the quality and the amount of food. The servers and the cashiers are very polite and cheerful. This location has 2 floors. The upstairs floor is quieter and less crowded, and also has a small outdoor seating area.

Love this place! If you are only in the downtown area during lunch there are 3 locations and all locations are great. Love the corn pudding and cakes! Cafeteria style and good southern cooking.

Came here with the family and enjoyed the shrimp étouffée and grilled chicken at a private event. The food was excellent and the service as well. The atmosphere was fun and of course very clean. Highly recommended as a fun stop in downtown Houston

Being in Jury Duty, the Baliff walked us to the one close to the courthouses. The restaurant is located in a church. Great menu, great food, love the environment. Red beans and rice to die for. There is plenty of art to purchase and a bookstore. Nice clean facility. Nice walk downtown. Was great to walk off food on the way back. They have a nice variety of Cajun favorites, chicken fried chicken, veggies, desserts and salads. Big portions. They have daily specials. It is cafeteria style. When they run out of certain things, they run out. Located Inside a beautiful church.

If you will, imagine with me. It's a hot summers day in the south. There's not much of a breeze. You've driven your horse and buggy into town at Market Square to conduct your business. You and your business associates decide to discuss things over lunch. Ya'll pull into Market Square into a restaurant named Treebeards. Ya'll walk in and immediately notice the architecture. Ya'll see that the restaurant is a walk through and order floor design. Ya'll walk through the food line. The first thing ya'll come upon is the icebox where you can find your favorite soda water or beer. Next ya'll notice the eye catching colors of the fruit and salad bar. A couple more steps and ya'll see a tantalizing array of game: fish chicken, beef and hog. A little further there's fresh veggies properly prepared and purchased from local growers. At the end where you pay for your vittles, there's sweets: chocolate chip cookies, red velvet cake, italian creme cake, pecan pie, brownies, all homemade. When ya'll get seated and take that first bite, ya'll will say that the hot ride into town was worth it. RIDE INTO TOWN AND TRY IT FOR YOURSELF!!!
