Sonny’s is an institution in Galveston. In a ground floor in a house in the downtown area of Galveston, Sonny’s was established in 1944. It is renown for its hamburgers. The rest of the menu is full of bar food type items. Full bar with cheap prices on liquor. A locals place.

When we visit the island, this is the first place we head, especially in oyster season. The Thursday before Christmas, we dug into a mug of a dozen shucked raw oysters -- plump, sweet and local. We traded one for a friend's fried shrimp, which was also yummy. Of course, the atmosphere is one of the main reasons to come. This is a true neighborhood tavern (family-friendly, however), owned and operated by the same family since the 1940s. Faithful customers who eat and drink here more than 30 days in a row get their own brass plaques. Yes, much of the seafood is fried, but you can find low-fat, low-calorie options if you look hard enough.

Excellent burgers, bar none for a real old school burger joint. Make sure you get a double meat if you're hungry. Fresh local veggies go with it, and the crispy edges of a flat grill make it perfect. The shrimp basket is always killer too, and the gumbo is some of the best I've tasted in Texas. And the beer and booze is cheap too. Then there's Junior minding the bar and cash register, a local gem if he has time to talk to you. Don't miss it!

Loved the burgers. Old fashioned good. Just plain good. And if you are lucky you’ll get to talk to Sonny like I did. Ask him about the bullet hole in the bar and you’ll get a little Texas history from an 87 year old owner who lived it.

I love this old neighborhood joint! It is frequented by the locals. It's a zany place....under a house. The hamburgers & french fries are terrific. Simple, diner-type food. Nothing fancy. They are known for the muffaletos, altho I've never tried them. The service is always terrific. Junior (the owner) is a hoot. He'll be at the cash register. He'll also be happy to show you evidence of the gun battle in the bar that took place in the 40s.
Note: I never knew about this place until I purchased a weekend home in the 'hood. Please, don't tell the tourists!!
