I've loved on the Balmain Peninsular for 14 years and never been to Il Grappolo. It's tucked away in Balmain Shores, not visible from Terry Street as you drive through. But since the Union Street cafes have opened up I am in the area a lot. Il Grappolo has come onto my radar and everyone is recommending it. We had to go. It is a modern yet traditional Italian restaurant with Italian staff adding to the authenticity. Warm for a winter's night but there's outside seating for the warmer seasons. The food is authentic Fresh Italian - delicious, no surprises or innovations but great, traditional Italian dishes. We had crispy coated calamari with a mayo dip and cucumber side (delicious), three dips: Sun-dried tomato, olive tapenade and pesto with plentiful crostini; gnocchi Napoletana and Penne Arrabbiata (tomato & chilli sauce). Sizeable portions - so we the penne was popped into a takeaway! It's BYO which is a deal-breaker for us in a neighbourhood restaurant. Definitely recommended.
