“Lovely accommodation in Pembroke Dock”
Reviewed 25 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

Our host Sue was extremely helpful. She made sure that we had exact directions to the accommodation on our booking in day. She also came to visit us on our first night to make sure that everything was ok and also pointed out local places to visit during our stay. On our trip to Pembroke Castle she also arranged for us to borrow her camping chairs and picnic blanket. All the other people that we met on site were particularly helpful and a special shout has to go out staff at the cafe opposite who made my 2 year old, wife and mum extremely comfortable whilst having breakfast there on our first morning in South Wales. They explained that the site has been purchased by local people who care about their community and are trying to make a success out of site that was recently closed down, Its very important to provide support to ventures like this up and down the country. The site details, descriptions and photos provided are extremely accurate so it does do exactly what it says on the tin. We wish them all the best in the future and hope that other visitors will be able to enjoy their stay here until we visit again. ;-)

How easy was it to book the property? How helpful were the directions to the property?
How easy was key pickup/access to the property? Overall condition of the property

Liked best: The team who owned the accomodation and cafe
Liked least: Its a shame that the wifi did not reach all the way to our accomodation & maybe a bigger TV ;-)

That's a long and lovely review Gerald. I'm really glad you enjoyed Pembrokeshire and the accommodation etc. I will pass your feedback on to the Cove Cafe staff. Managing the accommodation is hard work but I get to have the best of it if people have a good time. I hope you and your family visit us again for a bit longer so we can exchange history anecdotes. One of our visions at Llanion Cove is to rebuild the jetty around the corner from the slipway where the HMS Warrior was moored before relocating to Southampton. We plan to make a deep water mooring place for Tall Ships who currently locate in Milford Haven and lack a deep water mooring other than in a marina. The history of the HMS W is fascinating as is the history of Pembroke Dock's ship building past. Museum planned on site. If you want details of this let me know and I can direct you to the best www site. I digress though. Thanks again. Sue

“Family holiday in Wales”
Reviewed 24 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

A large unit that easily accommodates large or extended families or groups .
Pembrokeshire is lovely and easily assessable from this property .
The property is well presented , clean , three shower rooms. Dinning space for 12, well equiped kitchen.
The Cove cafe serves fantastic breakfast with wonderful staff.
When we went there, the evening restaurant wasn't open , the water sports center is yet to thrive .
There are wonderful beaches and lots to do in the area.
Pembroke Dock itself is past its best, but on good transport routes to wonderful places.
Some very good pubs and restaurants in the area.

Thank you for your review Bev and family. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. Pembrokeshire is a beautiful county and it is great to be able to offer family groups and friends affordable accommodation.
We are a new business of local people who have a vision of making this a great place for holiday makers who can enjoy the onsite and off site activities. The Cove cafe is a great space with beautiful estuary views and 'the fantastic breakfast' comments I will pass to staff. I am hoping you made the use of your courtesy voucher for tea and coffee. Unfortunately the restaurant has not yet opened, however, we are using that space as a venue for music and we had a successful evening recently when some other guests joined in the music and dancing from a local band. The water sports centre has been providing RYA accredited courses for about 2 weeks, provided for by PPSP- a local business with an established reputation. Our climbing wall is also accredited and has been available for most of the summer holiday period. It can be booked with prior notice for small and large groups at a reasonable fee. Regarding Pembroke Dock (we are on the outskirts) - you are correct in that it is an area that requires regeneration like so many areas in Wales. Llanion Cove is actually part of the regeneration committee supporting local efforts to bring this area positive benefits from our business. Your genuine review is really appreciated and I hope it will enable other potential guests to plan a holiday that really suits them. Sue

thank you james for your review. It was a pleasure hosting your family in Drake House and I'm sure you will come again - but be sure to bring your aunts/uncles/cousins and parents again - they are such great company.

“Fantastic Holiday! Shame about the accommodation”
Reviewed 10 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We stopped in Drakes House for 6 nights between July 30th - August 6th.

The first thing I should say is that 1 week before we went on holiday we were told that we had been moved to a different property on site - so we didn't end up with the views of the estuary - Instead had a view of the back of another building.

At time of writing, the description of the accommodation is a 'tad' misleading. The accommodation is less family orientated and more student digs. Set at the back of an industrial estate the property is apparently child friendly. Be prepared as there are locks on every doors that would be very simple for a small child to lock.

The play area pictured in the description was good fun.... when we had access to it. However, most evenings we had to put up with locals arriving to play football (on what we thought was a private play area). The last night of our stay (Thursday) the "lads" were there until 9.50pm before driving off. Please bear in mind that we had young children with us and this could be a factor in getting your kids to sleep. Our kids regularly came inside because there were older kids that had just arrived on the site. When asked about this Sue told my Sister-in-Law that they have an agreement with the local youth that means they are allowed to use it but must respect people staying there! They were there most evenings and would stay until late – hardly respectful.

The description shows Wi-Fi and Internet access as part of the amenities. However, this is only in the Cove cafe that has strange opening hours. In Drakes house there was no access to Wi-Fi so we felt the description was misleading. Child friendly but no Wi-Fi??!! My teenage daughter was really not impressed! All joking aside it is something that ‘some’ will definitely look for when booking a place (be it for work reasons or otherwise). If this is you then do not book here as it does not offer Wi-Fi!

The living room had more of a teachers common room feel to it - I half expected to see my old history teacher Mr. Clifton walk in with his glorious Kevin Keegan perm and make himself a cup of coffee. Fortunately we are early risers and were out of the front door at breakfast and out all day. The accommodation being used merely as someplace to sleep between the fun days out.

The bathroom/prison showers were varied - as one shower was too cold, one had no shower curtain at all and the other was "Holy baby Jesus" hot! - To make it a fun game I won't tell you which is which!

My wife had to sleep on the floor because the bunk bed she was going to sleep on didn't appear to be safe. Still it meant I got to take a funny picture of her with the dog!

The sofas were a mess. The TV pictured in the description is obviously the bigger, more expensive better looking brother to the one we ended up with. Satellite TV you say? - Where was that then? Gee that sure is a lovely looking cooker! - Sure is a lot nicer than the "ready for the scrap metal man" one we ended up with. Am I sounding bitter about the late accommodation switch?

On top of all this we had to put up with other guests and employees of the Cove Café blocking our only access in and out of our designated parking area! We would have to waste our time looking for the owners of the cars in order to get them moved! Admittedly this was only a problem during the first couple of days as something was obviously said. There is a big parking area round the back of the Cove next to the estuary, why couldn’t the employees just park there?

In conclusion - Drakes house is a very, VERY basic property. The amenities are (at writing) not to be trusted. I think this site is more suited to people looking to use the sailing facilities/hen or stag parties/scouts or people trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. It is definitely not a child friendly site and not a place to take a family - unless you really don't like them.

That said I had a great time! But this was down to the company that we chose to holiday with and the long days we spent away from the property. Pembroke and the rest of Pembrokeshire provided long and enjoyable days with beautiful coastline views. The beaches are fantastic (and for the most dog friendly) and all in close proximity to where we stayed.
P.S – We contacted the owner immediately after the stay to voice our concerns (we also left a list of improvements we thought she could make). We feel that we have been more than fair with how we have conducted ourselves and given Sue every opportunity to address the concerns we raised. I feel that her aggressive response to my Sister-in-Law (a series of emails) was not appropriate. After that I felt it was important to warn others looking to stay here.

There is a saying in life – “You get what you pay for”. You don’t even get that! We were treated badly, had the accommodation that we booked switched at the 11th hour and ended up with roughly half the amenities we had paid for. In case I have not been clear -

DO NOT STAY HERE! Families Avoid!

This negative review relates to another review dated 8th August 2016 and is correctly attributed to Drake House at Llanion Cove. The only additional comments that can be made are that Sue, who manages the accommodation, maintains that communication following the booking process was clear and a sound rational given regarding a switch to the neighbouring property relating to the dogs that were brought on holiday. Any emails from Sue to the person who booked this accommodation after the end of the holiday were an attempt to discuss the issues that were being raised. These emails were terminated at Julie's request. As stated in the previous review the issues raised will be considered in full and investigated as appropriate.
