40 Pier Road is very easy to find - it is the first house on the left as you drive off the Islay ferry in Port Ellen! The house looks very traditional and quite nondescript from the outside, but inside it has been modernised and refurbished with great style and panache. There are only two rooms available and both offer large en-suite accommodation. Very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Jim does the cooking at breakfast and Eleanor is a welcoming and knowledgeable hostess. No wonder guests come back year after year. A super place.

We were visiting Islay for a long weekend and booked in to the Finlaggan Suite at 40 Pier Road for our stay.

The suite was excellent - good sized bed, sofa/tv area, large bathroom with bath and shower and between them a small dressing area. It was perfect for a long weekend but would be an ideal size if you were staying long.

The rooms are on the 1st floor where the breakfast room is also located. The breakfast room has kitchen facilities which you are able to use (just leave the area clean) and looks out over the bay (as do the rooms). There are maps, books and board games for you to use.

Breakfast was excellent - cereals and fruit with a full cooked breakfast using local produce, freshly baked bread and tea/coffee/juice.

Location is good. Right beside the ferry for those traveling using it, and it's only a minutes walk to local hotels/restaurants in Port Ellen. For getting around Islay it's a great location and perfect for those wishing to visit Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg which you can walk to from Port Ellen.

Eleanor who owns the B&B is a fantastic source of knowledge and is more than happy to provide ideas and suggestions for where to visit, eat out, etc. A great host.

If we return we would happily stay at 40 Pier Road.

Room Tip: Finlaggan Suite was superb.

This was for us the perfect place to stay in Port Ellen. The location is great and the room was just everything we look for in accommodation. Eleanor provided a great breakfast and was extremely helpful. So much so that she knew that we intended to walk to a distillery, she had offered us a lift, but we said we would walk, however we got caught in the rain and got soaked and had to walk back to change. Seeing the really heavy rain and knowing we would have got caught in it she set out to look for us and didn't find us but when we got back to change she came out her door as we came in and offered to take us to the distillery. What a lovely gesture. We intend to go back to Port Ellen and this is where we will be hoping to stay.

The outside of the B&B is a bit unprepossessing, but my room (suite, in fact, there's a sitting room as well as the bedroom and bathroom) was very comfortable. The beds are soft, but that's a matter of personal preference.
Breakfasts were large (if you wanted) and very tasty, with a good choice, including some local products.
I didn't use the TV and music centre, but if you were stuck inside with bad weather they could be useful. I did read some of the good selection of books. I did use the wi-fi, which was handy for messaging friends in another B&B.

I had a fantastic stay at 40 Pier Road. The rooms were beautifully decorated with a seating area, the bed was really comfortable, the and the breakfast really tasty! Couldn't recommend more highly. Eleanor has extensive knowledge about Islay so make sure you use the opportunity!
