We were fortunate to spend a lovely weekend here in November 2011 during 'Islay Sessions' with live music in the bar and at the local hall nearby. The hotel itself was friendly, comfortable with very welcoming staff. It is beautifully decorated with art works that could rival a gallery! The rooms were spotless and well-equipped and our sea-view room with its double-windows was so relaxing. The food was a delight and local produce was cooked and served to a very high standard. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who is touring the Islands of Scotland - it is worth a detour even if you hadn't planned to visit Islay. You won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: A sea-view room is a real bonus but it is situated right on the sea front with good outside space. I...

We did not stay at the hotel, we rented a holiday cottage next door to this hotel. We visited the bar on several occasions' for a meal and drinks. On a Sunday and a Wednesday they provide live local folk music they really are very talented and on several occasions' the landlord Grahame sings some lovely solo pieces. We have been visiting Islay for many years and we always return to Port Charlotte and the hotel. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

we recieved a warm welcome right from the start and consistently high service throughout our stay. Great views of the loch from our room, excellent bathroom, good food in the restaurant and the bar and a lovely lounge with a warm fire for residents. Music on Sunday nights. Would happily return to explore this beautiful island further

I would love to like this hotel, but the actions of several staff members in one specific instance reduced our visit from a great hotel to something more akin to communist Eastern Europe. I will acknowledge a beautiful location, good food, and nice facilities, all at a premium, but reasonable price, IF the service were up to snuff.

However, the staff in the hotel, bar, and restaurant repeatedly colluded to deny courteous service and a very basic request; a dessert from the bar menu, rather than the dinner menu. First, in the restaurant (10 meters from the bar), "no, that's a different establishment". Ok, that was fine, even if the drinks were all conveyed from the same bar. We finished a pleasant dinner, having been mildly shorted on a portion (requested a double appetizer for a main, got 1.5 appetizer at 2 times price. We walked into the bar to get an after-dinner drink and requested the dessert we'd earlier wanted, only to be told the kitchen was closed. 10 minutes later, other tables in the half-full bar were greeted by a waitress with dessert menus. Inquired again, pointing to an empty table, and were again told, "no". Finally, after escalating to the management, we were allowed to have a simple dessert with our meal.

If we had not been staying there, I would obviously have left immediately. As it stands, I would recommend staying elsewhere when possible. Despite a very nice set of assets, this hotel needs complete retraining of its staff. The whole experience was taken from very good, if expensive, to overpriced and stressful because of the concerted actions of multiple staff members to be systematically intransigent and unhelpful.

We stayed for a week, it was a bit expensive compared with similar on the mainland but that apart, lovely room, spectacular views across Loch Idaal, very friendly helpful staff. thought the restaurant menu was a bit limited but this was made up for by a delightful maitre d!!

Would we stay again? Definitely!!

Room Tip: Ask for room 1 the view is amazing.
