This museum has to be on everybody's itinerary, and is best visited at the beginning of your stay. By seeing the displays the visitor will get an idea of the geology of the region, and this will help with interpretation of the landscape. For instance, we found evidence of fossil beaches and stromatolites on our travels (at Yesnaby), and this was beautifully showcased at this museum. There is also lots to see about wartime Orkney, and of course on the Neolithic period. A real gem of a small museum and heritage centre.

Thank you very much for recommending us. The museum really does have a lot to see but guests are very welcome to break up the visit with a cuppa (and a cake!) in the Heritage Tearoom then go back into the museum.

It would be easy to drive past this museum after visiting Scapa Flow and the Churchill Barriers, but it is well worth stopping off to visit. The fossil displays are so well presented and explained and the exhibits fascinating. There is also a lovely tea room, manned by volunteers, with scrumptious cakes!

It was a misty day and this was a lovely place to spend a few hours and much more than a museum with a few fossils. There was a wide range of gifts in the gift shop too.
We also visited the cafe, my husband has the scotch broth which he said was the. Besthehadever tasted, for him to compliment food in a restaurant it must have been good.

Thank you for the lovely comments.
The compliment about the soup has quite made our cook's day and I think she will be on a high for the next few days!

Very well thought out set of displays covering the geology of the orkney islands. Super examples of fossils and minerals from around the world with sensibly priced gift shop offering the enthusiast a wide range of books, fossils and other items. Staff also most welcoming and attentive.

Thank you for your lovely review. We are delighted that you enjoyed the geology and fossil galleries.
For visitors who may be more interested in social history the Heritage galleries upstairs cover a wide range of local history and the 'Building the Barriers' exhibition (ground level) explains the construction of the Churchill Barriers.

A superb mix of fossils, geological specimens and local memorabilia. Well worth two hours or more of exploring.

Then the cafe and it's home baking will finish off your visit perfectly.
