Choosing Charmouth for a day trip out is always full of surprises. Having never dined in this quaint seaside village we did not really know what to expect.
So when we came across the royal oak we were totally surprised.
Friendly welcome by staff and customers. Lovely clean and spacious pub.
A great choice on the lunchtime menu, but was also given the option of 3 or 4 choices off of the evening menu.
Personally, I went for the steak ciabatta. Absolutely gorgeous. Plentiful and cooked to perfection..
The portions are excellent value.
Will definitely return to this establishment, great customer service and overall friendly with great choice of beer and food.

Really nice atmosphere, the bar staff were welcoming and the food was delicious. The home made mushroom soup was especially tasty. Recommend getting there early to claim your table as although the week after New Year was quiet, once the season starts I imagine it will be really popular. Scores on the doors “5” rating was also a bonus. Highly recommended!

A pre Christmas rendezvous was arranged for a lunch with family and a friend recommended this pub , being part way between our respective homes at Bournemouth and Taunton, We were not disapointed.
The warmth of the welcome was obvious by the an open log fire and prompt pouring of a pint of Palmers 500.
The decor and layout are of a traditional Dorset pub with many of the patrons from the village confirming this is for the customer seeking a change from the mass produced pub chain.
The cuisine was also home cooked rather than factory food which of course meant the menu was limited but adequate.
I chose the prawn cocktail followed by the beef and ale pie. The starter met expectations and it was a proper pie of short crust pastry with juicy steak. (Does anyone else feel cheated with a 'pie' comprising of a dish of stewed beef which is served capped with a lid of flakey pastry.
Others of our group ordered the garlic mushrooms as starters followed by the fish and chips They were equally pleased with their lunch.
This is not a deluxe venue but a a friendly pub, with good value, and to be recommended for those wishing to visit a pub that reflects some of the atmosphere that Thomas Hardy used or his novels.

This is a lovely, cosy pub in the centre of Charmouth village serving traditional pub food. The landlords and the young waiting staff could not have been more friendly or welcoming. They were more than happy to prepare something special for the vegan members of our family and the service we received was excellent on a very busy Friday night.

We were so pleased with the service that we went back for Sunday lunch which was also excellent.
