I had to travel to Barnstaple for work for a several week stint away from home. After staying initially in Barnstaple I moved to the Saunton Sands, about 5 miles away. This is a lovely hotel, family run, with magnificent views of the long Saunton beach. It was quiet, up to date, well run, with polite and helpful staff. Rooms were well appointed, food was excellent and choice of drinks good. I shall be returning in the future with my family.

The booking was made at very short notice and we were not disappointed. Our room was excellent and the sea view was worth the supplement. The bathroom was amazing. Amenities excellent, food and service of high quality.

Stayed on Sunday through to Wednesday over bank holiday weekend.

We arrived at midday with our 2 yo in tow, after a long 3.5 hour drive. Room wasn't ready, which was what we expected, and was told it would be at 3pm. So we decided to get some lunch. As a wedding was on we were told that lunch was being served in a different room. After a 45 mins wait after being seated and trying to get the waitress's attention twice, we packed up our things and went to Braunton for lunch. The waitress did come over that evening and apologised but it was unacceptable for the hotel to not have enough staff to deliver a basic guest need.

After that we returned at 3pm prompt, reception first said our room wasn't ready and then 5 mins later it was. We booked a family suite with adjoining twin room. When we opened the door, someone else's bags and things were in the room (plus none of the things we had pre-booked for our child - cot, etc). After going back to reception and an hour later - it was resolved.

The rest of the trip was more like my expectations - my wife and I have been several times (and both as children coincidentally) so we know what to expect from Saunton Sands.

The room was lovely, with a great sea view. Some details in the room were left unchecked (e.g. light fitting nearly coming off the wall, carpets weren'y vacuumed thoroughly during our stay) - which I expected from their premium price point.

The staff were excellent - friendly and attentive (aside from the 1st day), especially the nursery which we used once (2 hours free but the nursery is only open certain days).

Baby listening was "if we can check every 10 mins we can but not guaranteed so you can dial in when you like" so we ended us using an ipad/iphone so we can hear/see her sleeping at night when we ate in the restaurant.

The food was good - not memorable but not bad. Child's food was great and chef provided anything we wanted if not on the menu.

We have heard rave reviews from Bedruthan so will probably try that next time.

Room Tip: Family suites - ask for newly refurbished, they are at ends of the corridors so are quieter too

Once again the staff at Saunton Sands Hotel were amazing and made our trip (along with the stunning views and glorious sunshine) - in particular Liz in Reception, Neil on the door, Maurici in the Bar, and Cara were all fantastic, the rooms were perfect and clean and made up just as we requested, Breakfast was top notch - a real delightful weekend away as always.
Thanks again for a lovely stay.
Scott
