We booked a private room for 4 only a short time before our arrival so were thankful to get the room. The room is quite dated. The carpet looked like it hadn't been vacuumed for a while and there were stains on the sheets and cobwebs around the windows. The mattresses were appalling. You could feel every spring and they dipped significantly in the middle. The toilet took forever to refill and was badly stained at the bottom of the bowl which is a little off putting.
However there were two pillows (albeit rather flat) and when I spoke to the guy at reception about the mattresses he took me to an empty room to see if the mattresses there were any better so we could swap them to our room. They were even worse but we were allowed to take the duvets and we placed these between us and the mattresses and we were fine after that. The shower was hot and had fairly good pressure.
Free Wi-fi in reception, laundry room and kitchen all available. I would have liked to have had a dryer available as quite often on holiday you can get rather mucky or wet and need laundry done fairly quickly.
There is on site parking available and the hostel is just a short walk to the right out of the drive to the Monastic site and a quick walk down the road to the left takes you to a gate on the left which takes you onto the Green walk around the Lower Lake.
All in all a great stay due to the location and helpful staff at the hostel but definitely need new mattresses and a higher standard of housekeeping.
Ps. The Wicklow Heather is a good place for food and definitely walk the White Spinc walk beginning along the Miners Road.
