Our extended family went to Roundwood House to celebrate my mother's 80th birthday (shhh, she doesn't want anyone to know!) We had been here 10 years ago to celebrate her 70th birthday. It was PERFECT! Roundwood House is that perfect combination of feeling so homely but yet with service and great food and wine! We started our stay with G&Ts around the roaring fire. Hannah and Paddy are incredibly welcoming and Paddy did the perfect rendition of Happy Birthday on his acoustic guitar as Mum's birthday cake came out after a fab meal. Our bedrooms were wonderfully comfortable and we enjoyed spending some time wandering around the woods accompanied by the house's loyal golden labrador. Is Roundwood for everyone? Possibly not - for those who want a synthetic, everything is perfect with immaculate furnishings and paintwork they will be disappointed. For those more discerning who love the atmosphere of an old historical Irish home with all the history, genuine Irish hospitality, quirkiness and welcome that Roundwood House offers in authentic pure abundance this will definitely hit the spot perfectly!

Nice old house with lots of character, we stayed in Yellow house for two nights and had dinner on one night. Breakfast and Dinner were both lovely.
Our room was nice, no locks for doors, no tv, wifi worked sometimes, and no tea/coffee making facilities. We did receive a lovely pot of coffee on arriving.

Hi Edwina,
Although your review isn't the worst, 3 stars is a little disappointing. I think we're very clear on our website that we're not a hotel but a family home and therefore shouldn't be compared to a hotel in a negative light. It would be different if we advertised ourselves as having televisions, tea/coffee making facilities etc. in rooms and then didn't provide them but we purposely don't.
Regarding the internet, it's always a bit of a struggle for us, living as we do in rural Ireland, but we do our best and actually just had a new line put into the Yellow House which I thought was working fine. You should have mentioned to me that it wasn't as a simple reset probably would have done the trick. I should also mention, we serve as much tea and coffee as guests like in the Drawing Room and never charge for this.
I know you came on a voucher that was gifted to you so perhaps given the option we wouldn't have been your first choice of place to stay. We do fully appreciate the experience is not for everyone but this is exactly why we've put so much work into our website to give a clear picture of what we do offer to potential customers.

A stay in this wonderful early Georgian house is an opportunity to take time out from the busy, rushing, frenetic pace of life. I challenge anyone to not feel that Roundwood is like stepping into another world with a relaxed pace and an "other worldly" atmosphere. This is not five star fluffy towel impersonal territory but an opportunity to dream perhaps of living in another age and to enjoy the warm, welcoming and wonderful hospitality of Hannah and Paddy who make you feel that the house is yours for the duration of your stay. The meal that Paddy cooked and served was worthy of any Michelin starred restaurant and the breakfast was equally good. A walk around the grounds after breakfast is a must as is a wander in the library. This is a wonderful unique place with all the quirkiness of a house built in 1720 and which although lovingly cared for by its current owners needs constant care and attention.

We stayed for a wonderful night in the garden room, it was spotless clean and very comfortable with real old world charm. The surroundings were peaceful and tranquil and very relaxing. The hosts Hannah and Paddy were very pleasant and couldnt do enough for us, they were the real stars of the house and treated you as you were a friend visiting their home. The dinner was so delicious and we had great chats with the other guests which made for a very pleasant evening, Paddy even gave us a few tunes on his guitar which delighted everyone. I would highly recommend staying here as it was very wholesome and welcoming.Paddy and Hannah do a great job and could teach some of the 5 star hotels a lesson in genuine hospitality. We definitely will be returning.

Room Tip: there are also lovely little cottages available in the grounds
