A great welcome at O'Dowd's today, and fabulous chicken curry and garlic bread, it was very tasty indeed. We had a lovely time and all of my group thoroughly enjoyed their food, especially the Seafood Chowder. WE had a booking for 4 and arrived with 11 and it was no trouble at all.

Rather confusing to try TA’s top pick in Roundstone and find nothing to be able to compliment.

This was a Sunday night in low season - so let’s give the benefit of the doubt and imagine the chef had the night off. But if this was the case then run a simplified menu at a lower price point. Our experience left us not knowing whether to laugh or cry and does nothing but harm to the venue’s reputation.

When will restaurants learn to play to their strengths and work around their weaknesses?

The greatest compliment we can pay is that the seaweed hummus starter ‘wasn’t unpleasant.’ But not was it easy to distinguish from regular hummus (and I have the lingering impression that this may have simply been regular hummus with a sprinkle of shredded seaweed on top). In any event simply dumping some hummus in a small ramekin with some sliced bread on the side does not a starter make. Let alone justify the €6.95 charge.

Even worse was the daily ‘special’ - spicy salmon with mash (which we opted to change for baby new potatoes). Nothing baby about the potatoes (which were simply large potatoes that had been cubed and boiled) and the only specialness or spiciness on the salmon was that one end had been drizzled with a balsamic glaze. It made for the sort of simple supper you’d do for yourself or your children if you were in a hurry. Accompanied by a dismal side salad. No skill, imagination or finesse of any kind - nothing whatsoever to warrant the €16.95 price tag.

We should have said something but had no confidence that there was any chance of improvement.

Sorry to be so scathing - but this wasn’t remotely good enough.

Always stop here if in roundstone, it may not look like much from the outside but it is great food. Genuine staff, that are friendly and good for some authentic Irish chat. All this combined helps make it a special place for both domestic tourists and international. Food is typically Irish and mostly all locally sourced. Can't go wrong with any of the fish dishes, as you eat and look out onto the Atlantic Ocean. It's an unbeatable location in round stone.

We went for lunch. Our orders arrived within 3 minutes- excellent service. The bar was not full- just 2 other groups at other tables. We took the window table.
It is a sociable sort of place. We got talking with our neighbours who were French and ran a restaurant in Kildare. We realised that there is something special about this place which is a traditional country pub which has pulled itself up to serve great sea food.
I cannot complain about anything!
