We hired a car and drive to the volcano through wonderful scenery and the volcano crater was spectacular. The plumes of smoke can be seen for miles but to stare into the deep crater is amazing. Fantastic views however a lot of trails were closed for safety. Well worth a visit and the small but informative museum and information centre was really great. A must if you're in Nicaragua. It is located just off route 4, which is a good road, and only 30/35 km from Managua.

How often do you get to stare into the red hot mouth of a volcano? If you are visiting Nicaragua, this is a must-do activity! We went at night, which we were told was the best time for viewing, and we were not disappointed! Beware, you will have 20 minutes to view the lava lake - they let 70 people up at a time and the attraction is only open for 3 hours in the evenings. So, plan carefully, but don’t miss this! It’s amazing!

I came here with my husband's family that is from Nicaragua. We came in the evening to see the active volcano and it truly is an unforgettable experience. To see an active volcano at night was impressive. We could see the glow of the magma in the crater. We had a tour guide from the national park explain to us the history of the volcano and the type of studies being done.
The only downside was that when the winds shifted the fumes from the volcano made it hard to breath. This may be difficult for people with issues such as asthma.
Otherwise, I highly recommend if you are in Managua you make a trip to this volcano.

Volcan Masaya NP offers the rare opportunity of an easily accessible view into the caldera of an active (still venting gases and ash) volcano. The site warns of shifting winds and potential toxic carbon monoxide exposures...the retaining wall is right on the caldera rim...that is as close as I have ever seen public access to such a natural wonder. Take the risk and experience this! There is a NP ranger at the observation area who can explain the volcano and is monitoring for hazards (and tourist stupidity).

We went with Tierra Tours whose office is on a corner of the Main Street inGranada ,right by Hotel Dario .
Excellent tour company- efficient , and well organised, with Gustavo the guide a good English speaker .
The tour was super ; everyone had to queue for entry to the reserve at night ,then we had a look round the visitor centre and finally went up to see the bubbling lava lake and the plumes of sulphuric smoke .
Very atmospheric at dusk. And because it was a small group of people at a time everyone had a perfect view.
