My uhsband and I stumbled upon this great place by complete accident during our three week ex tempore driving trip around Finland. We live in Helsinki but wanted to get away from it all and explore lapland a bit more. We passed the sign for "gold village" as we were driving on to the next big town and the intention really was just to have a look round the place and then continue our journey, but the place and the people there proved too fascinating and in the end we stayed for two nights and three days. The gold village itself and the organised gold panning was brilliant and great fun. Really well laid out and professionally put together displays. The mineral and gemstone exhibition was particularly interesting and well done. But the thing that made it special for us was meeting Kasper the resident geologist, Jouko and his dog and the two brothers who own the place. They really couldn't have done more to make us welcome. For instance on our first night there we were invited after the museum closed to go and sit around the campfire with them in the reconstructed Alaskan gold mining village to chat, drink homemade cider and grill sausages! Kasper is a literal "mine" of information and we were so struck by gold fever that we paid the extra €40 and spent the whole of the next day digging and panning for gold on a professional claim nearby. Kasper took us to the place and gave us thorough instructions on what to do and how to do it safely and then we were left alone for the whole day to dig to our hearts content! We really got a feel for what it's like to be a gold miner and now have a newfound respect for anyone who does that for a living...really hard work but the experience is well worth the €40 paid. We even found our very own bit of lapland gold (and a few nice garnets) to bring home as a souvenier and I can thoroughly recommend paying the extra for an experience you wont ever forget! All in all this place is amazing, even if you have no interest in geology whatsoever. Kids would love it and I think, as in our case, it would bring out the big kid in anyone.

Room tip: For a true Lapland experience, stay in one of the log cabins instead of the hotel...they're beautiful!

If you go to the Finnish Lapland and would like to try to pan then this is the ideal place. They have five or six cottages there, you cannot beat the feeling (and all the mosquito) but you will have fun. They have camping places too.
