I was so impressed with this hotel when I stayed with my son in July I wanted to bring my wife for a short stay - although it's more than 4 hours away from our home in S Wales. It is at the south end of Derwent Water, just 10 mins away from Keswick, and on the fringe of the beautiful village of Borrowdale that has a peaceful tranquility about it that seems to percolate into the hotel itself - whether you inhale it through the bedroom windows or from the wide impressive mountain views from the public rooms, especially the dining room.
The owners have thought of pretty well everything to provide for guests' comfort, including the 3 essential B's - beds, bathrooms and breakfasts, to say nothing of dinner. Every course of every meal was simply superb, and the service was all that one could wish for. Congratulations! This is an hotel to return to, delightfully situated in one of England's most magnificent areas.

This is a superb hotel in every way and anyone staying here will not be disappointed. There is a friendliness about the staff which is very warm and welcoming and the efficiency is also part of this hotel which is noticeable as soon as you walk into reception. Our room was both spacious and spotlessly clean as was the bathroom. A wonderful view from the balcony too. Breakfasts are self service for the fruit juice, cereals and fruit but the tea or coffee is brought to your table as is the hot breakfast which is freshly cooked to order. I had both porridge and a cooked breakfast as well as a huge bowl of freshly prepared fruit. We booked our dinner on the five nights we were at the hotel for 8pm and went down for pre dinner drinks at 7.30pm. Every meal we had here was beautifully presented and tasty ..... there was just no complaints at all.
This hotel is one of our very favourite hotels and we have stayed in quite a few. It comes FULLY RECOMMENDED and we shall return as soon as we can.
Set is wonderful Borrowdale too......what more could you ask for?

We have just spent four nights at this hotel. The whole experience was excellent. The reception was friendly and we were impressed with the general décor and attention to detail in all the communal areas. The lift took us to the second floor and our room no. 22. We were pleasantly surprised at how nice it was after reading somewhat negative reviews earlier. The window was large and there was a lovely view of Catbells .Some neat panelling blocked the flat roof of probably the kitchen and an array of industrial fans. Yes there was a hum from said fans but as it was very warm weather( window open fully ) we had the room fan on most of the time at night so that over took the outside noise. The bed was very comfy and en suite smart- although somewhat small. Took some careful manoeuvring to pass the toilet, heated towel rail and door opening and closing. At night it was very quiet-the deep carpets and quality doors no doubt helped to keep the sound down.
Breakfast was wonderful and the evening meals very good indeed. The service from all the staff was outstanding. Friendly, polite, and professional at all times.
Amazingly, the whole time we were in Borrowdale the weather was very warm, dry and sunny...this made our trip even more delightful as the valley is of course famous for the opposite!
Borrowdale Gates has a perfect setting and we can really recommend a stay at this
delightful hotel.

Room Tip: room 22 was a standard double- if possible try another room to avoid the kitchen fans.

This hotel will not disappoint! It is surrounded by magnificent countryside and has stunning views from all the public rooms. We stayed in room 19 which was large and well appointed with a delightful balcony. There is easy access direct from the hotel to beautiful walks around Derwent Water.

The food was of a high standard and very well presented. What sets this hotel apart from other good hotels is the staff! All members of staff were very friendly and gave excellent service whilst managing to remain unobtrusive. It is very obviously a family run hotel which shows in the attention to detail and the care taken with everything.

We were travelling in a party of three, it was a special holiday for my 93 year old mother in law. The only reason I have dropped a star is that when my mother in law asked if we could have a table by the window for dinner she was told that it was not possible as three was an "awkward" number for the hotel. There are tables for 2 and tables for 4 by the window but unfortunately there was not sufficient flexibility to seat 3. Such a shame as it took the edge of the stay for her. We also had to eat at 6.30 both evenings as the other sittings were full. We had stayed at two other hotels on this holiday and not found being a party of 3 a disadvantage. If you are a party of 2 or 4 you will probably find the hotel to be 5 star. We would definitely return but as a party of 2.

Borrowdale Gates Hotel is set in two acres of woodland in the hamlet of Grange in the heart of the beautiful Borrowdale valley.

It is a family owned and family managed hotel and it is distinctly apparrent.
I had a lovely spacious room with pleasing country views. The shower was good and the bath towels were of a very good quality.

The lounges are well appointed and there are magnificent views of the hotels' gardens, fells and woodland and the lounges are an oasis of calm and afford great relaxation away from the stresses and strains of this modern world .
A further lounge had a real fire with logs burning in abundance. What joy it is to enjoy a drink and to plan the following days events sitting here.

The dining room is a delight with crisp linen tablecloths, sparkling glasses and subtle lighting which adds to the unique atmosphere of this very special place
Nick ,Assisstant Manager ,has an eye for detail and strives for perfection and everyone is greeted personally.
Phoebe was our waitress and she was very efficient and she was lovely.
There is an excellent choice from the menu at both breakfast and dinner. The food is cooked to perfection and many thanks and praise must go to the Chefs and to the kitchen staff.

Cumbria is host to some of the best of the British hotels and
Borrowdale Gates Hotel ,in my opinion,is right up there at the top of the league. I have stayed at many good class hotels in the Borrowdale valley. This hotel has the edge on them all and it is far superior to its counterparts.

Hesitate no more. Book in at this hotel and enjoy the experience and judge for yourselves. You may arrive a little tired but you will leave enchanted. Treat yourself and book in.You will certainly be glad that you did.
Well done Borrowdale Gates hotel.
