We really didn't allow enough time to see this museum and the connected Natural History museum (which has an excellent cool collection of gems and minerals, and dinosaur and other things). the collection in the art museum has fantastic examples from a wide range of famous artists (expressionists, american and other). The building is an interesting mix of old classical architecture and some modern, but it was a little difficult to figure out how to get around because of the way the different floors connect or don't connect. We should have allowed a few hours to stroll around both museums. There is alot to see. If you are an art fan, this place is highly recommended.

I went here with a friend as a drive by. We were down visiting Fallingwater the day before and on our way back home to Chicago we thought we would see some of the sights of Pittsburgh as neither of us had been there before. What an absolute treat this museum is. We breezed thru the history part because there were lots of families but the art museum is great. You get a good taste of many different genres of art and overall it ends up being a rather comprehensive art experience. People are saying to skip the modern art but if it's your thing, don't skip it! and if it's not your thing, give a try because some of the pieces aren't too way out there and you might just surprise yourself by liking some of them. I'm going back to this area in a few weeks and I'm staying at a nearby hotel so that I can go back to this museum and pick up some new ones.

I've been visiting the Carnegie Museum of Art since I was a child, and I never tire of it. Part of the reason is because of its core collections, which were chosen with exquisite care and discernment, and part is because of the sometimes wild, sometimes quirky, sometimes jaw-droppingly stunning rotating exhibits and special gallery displays on offer. The docents at the Carnegie are particularly well-trained, and I strongly recommend taking one of the daily special tours (free with general admission) where you learn about one particular piece of work, or genre, room, or artist, that the docent of the day has chosen for your delight. This is a patron-friendly environment: really clearly laid out and curated. If you're just visiting Pittsburgh, put aside at least a day for visiting the museums (art and natural history) - - and if you live here, make like a tourist, and find our how lucky you are to have this at your fingertips!!

P.S. They've got special tours for people with Alzheimer's and their caregivers - - how incredible is that?? Spread the word - - and the joy - - and go!!
