Owner description: In 1906, industrialist Pierre du Pont (1870-1954) purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, PA, to save a collection of historic trees from being sold for lumber. Today, Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s great horticultural displays, encompassing 1,077 acres of dazzling gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains, 10,010-pipe Aeolian organ and 4.5-acre conservatory. Longwood continues the mission set forth by Mr. du Pont to inspire people through excellence in garden design, horticulture, education and the performing arts, through programming that includes exhibitions, musical performances by leading artists, renowned horticulture education programs, horticulture research, environmental stewardship and community engagement.

It's about half an hour drive from Philadelphia and it really worth my time. I recommend checking the official Web site for exhibitions and performances because there's always a great choice of events to fit many different needs. When I had been there in last september the Light Installations by Bruce Munro were a main event, that was a very special exhibition of amazing and colorful lights installed all across a large area of the Gardens. It had been so amazing becasue it gave to the gardens a sort of unreal atmpshere, sustained by an inspiring music coming from the backgrounds. Btw the all park itself is amazing, and just walking around the marvellous flowers and plants was a great pleasure, benches were everywhere to stay and enjoy the nature around. A great and renowned botanical garden is also an important piece of the Gardens and it included a number of exotic plants which I had seen ever since.

Every time we come to Longwood we see something different in bloom. We discover new flowers on each visit. One of our favorite local things to do.

I have lived in the Chadds Ford area for 15 years of my 79 years and this site, although I have visited it on multiple occasions, never ceases to amaze and delight. It is , without a doubt , the finest example of luxurious gardens, fountains and enchanting walking trails in Pennsylvania and may be unrivaled in the world. It sits on 800 sumptuous acres. It has a superb restaurant on premises to make the whole day an unforgettable experience. GO !!! Don't hesitate.

Year round Longwood is a great day. Holiday lights is always a new design, so well worth the visit to see what they have done to outdo their past Holiday display. Timed tickets are required, but consider arriving early to walk around and see the calm winter grounds...then wait for the lightings to begin...and see an all new Longwood.
The employees at Longwood are always friendly, and welcoming and willing to answer your questions, tours are offered and can offer some nice information about what it takes to keep what you are seeing...going everyday . Special events and fountain shows , while not cheap, are really special events. Food offerings do need to improve, as selection is limited and are not in the value price range, but the food is more then burgers and fries.

This is a great place to enjoy the outdoors and they always have things that are taking place to view as well. I think that it is a little pricey for kids, because there was not that much going on there when we were there (for them anyways). Otherwise, we had a great time!
