“Sixth time and still OK!!”
Reviewed 13 February 2012

We have been to Capella each year since 2007, even though it takes us two days to get there from Hawaii, so there must be a reason. Actually many reasons but just read the other reviews and you get the idea. But this was our first time in the Makambo Loft which may now be our favorite room. As it is at the far corner of the lodge it has views of the ocean and the mountains, and seems the most private of the rooms. That being said, we have not yet splurged for the Lidgebird Suite. The only issue with Makambo is the spiral staircase to the bedroom which requires some skill and concentration to negotiate (although having climbed Mt. Gower three times I was able to manage). We are told a upstairs bathroom is to be added which will make this suite complete. Other issue were the rails and baby rails (birds) who were literally at our door demanding to be fed. As always, the Capella staff was special and Mark the Kiwi put on a special barbi for us prior to our departure. Although this did require our having to walk to our flight (all of 5 minutes from the beach barbi) at least we did not have to carry our luggage! Meals were uniformly excellent and dinner portions were generous. We had kingfish in a different preparation almost every night (having caught a 20 kger on Jack Shick's boat). One thing not to miss is Ian Hutton's lecture (Sat nite) on all aspects of the island. Also, the museum is a special place- so special that we are sponsoring a scientific display. Needless to say we will be back next year, as well as visiting the Baillie's "neighbor lodge" at Southern Ocean this August for only the fourth time.

Room Tip: All have splendid views, but we found Makambo Loft the best. But keep in mind that some are two lev...

As if the destination couldn't get any better, Capella Lodge is incredible! Exception food, wine and all-round service. The staff are easily some of the most friendly, obliging and relaxed crew we have ever come across, and they add enormously to the enjoyment of the stay. Our room was comfortable, unique and well equipped, with beautiful views from both the bedroom and living room. The ability to walk, cycle (bikes provided by lodge), swim etc. from the doorstep made for a great combination with all the decadent eating!! Thanks to Capella for a memorable 3 nights (which felt much longer!); we are now very keen to check out Southern Ocean Lodge a bit closer to home on KI.

Room Tip: All rooms face towards the superb view!

From our arrival on Lord Howe Island until we left Capella Lodge and it's staff impressed. Driving us from the airstrip to the Lodge, Libby started our introduction to the Lodge and Island pointing out beaches, possible BBQ spots, golf course etc. We stayed in the Lagoon Loft which was very comfortable and well equipped. The staff were on hand to offer advise regarding possible walks and cycle rides. It was fun to be able to explore the island by bike, even in the rain. It is worth booking spa treatments in advance as things seemed to get booked up and it would be a shame to miss out on this as my massage was very good.
Breakfast was good although perhaps limited in choice when compared to other similar properties. Dinners were of a consistently high standard and they were able to adapt to food preferences.
Criticisms... The weather (nothing the Lodge can do about the wind and rain which blighted out stay). Lack of places to relax in the sun on a lounger. Had the weather been better the choice would have been to lie on a towel on one of lovely beaches or to sit on our balcony - neither would be very comfortable.

What a great place... Everything was generously comfortable in our room, the food great in the lodge, the location the best on the Island, the manner of greeting, informing and stimulating the guests was impeccable.

Lord Howe Island is really beautiful, close to Sydney compared to most places and in good weather is just a Pacific treat. It is both relaxing and there is plenty to do if you like that sort of place & above all it is a stunning island - immaculately maintained from the water to the peak of the mountains, no keys on doors, no noise, no 'mass tourists'. The Capella Lodge adds to that by thrusting you towards stunning views by virtue of its excellent location and then pampering you in the most subtle manner.

Being a guest here is the most marvellous balance between being a hotel guest and being in a home situation with great staff to make everything available and flexible in the most relaxed manner. Nothing too much trouble, and in fact everything you would want has been prepared if you want it anyway. You don't sign for anything, you don't pay extra for many things anyway and the staff are just charming, clever, efficient and kind. How wonderful and admirable is that ?

We paid for our visit months before going, so the cost was not anywhere near my mind, just the pleasure and feeling that we made a great choice being at Capella and on Lord Howe Island. I don't recall what it cost and it was worth every penny.

Room Tip: I don't think there can be a bad room here. We had the biggest 'pavillion' and it was l...
