“Massey's - Still Scooping After 68 Years”

Massey's Frozen Custard
Ranked #2 of 14 Quick Bites in Carlisle
Restaurant details
Reviewed 30 August 2017

A family visit to Carlisle, PA, must always include an evening visit to Massey's Frozen Custard, which does soft-serve right. Although there is now a bit of competition in the Carlisle area for that sweet cream fix, Massey's remains highly popular with young and not-so-young alike, as it has since 1949. The order counter inside is very narrow and fills up quickly. Outdoor seating and tables is available. Sundae prices range from $3.30 (baby size) to $5.25 (3 toppings); add $.75 for hand-dipped ice cream. The Arctic Mount (thick shake, spoon only) is priced at $4.20 (small), $4.98 (medium) and $5.75 (large). I ordered a medium with Reese's and peanuts when a small would have sufficed. Novelty ice cream products are $1.50 and $2.00; cones range from $1.83 (kid) to $4.30 (4 toppings); and shakes are priced at $3.25 (small), $4.30 (medium), and $4.88 (large). A friendly warning to newcomers, warm evenings at Massey's can get a bit messy.

I recently had to start watching carbs due to my blood sugar levels getting close to the Type2 Diabetes level. There are so many foods that have carbs in them, but it's nice to have an ice cream place be conscious of those of us who have to watch our diet. Massey's usually has 4 or 5 choices of 'no sugar added' ice cream which are more choices than most places. The best part--it tastes good!

We stopped here after eating at the Rustic Tavern. I haven't had custard in a long time and it was really good. Pleasant staff and reasonable prices.

What bad can you say about a local institution that servers ice cream in the summer? Not much! This drive-in style tiny brick building has been service locals and Dickinson College students soft serve milkshakes and malts (yes malts) for decades. Under new ownership and management several years back, they haven't missed a beat. No seating inside (just a counter to order from and barley room for that) but outdoor benches and picnic tables, and your car serveras the dining area. Sure, their are chain Italian Ice and ice cream shops across town, but it you want a slice of Americana, this is the place to visit.

This is way better than an Ice Cream Stand. I love my ice cream and this was the best I have enjoyed in a very long time. The service was kind and patient as well as helpful. Except I made the pleasant mistake prolly a common one here. I was very happy with the satisfying taste texture and total richness of my dish. Less air more fat plenty of what ever I don't know any of that, just it was perfect. A classic walk up and order a must stop over. Thanks so much enjoy this one all of you and yes the have something for those lactose intolerant as well.
