Description: Departure Restaurant is located atop the Nines Hotel and offers modern Asian cuisine in a sleek, cosmopolitan setting with two outdoor decks and stunning views of the city, mountains and river. Chef de Cuisine Gregory Gourdet creates traditional Asian preparations with Northwest ingredients in signature dishes such as the restaurant’s grilled kushiyaki selections, Indonesian spiced chicken and maguro karai honey sushi rolls. Departure’s bar showcases exotic cocktails, a global wine list and the city’s largest sake list. The saké and shochu list is one of the largest in the city and represents many hand-crafted, artisan producers. Departure boasts the design skills of Jeff Kovel of Skylab Architecture, one of Portland’s leading architectural firms. The overall design of the 9,000 square-foot space added a new full-level 15th floor to the original 1908 Meier & Frank building and two new rooftop patios with views overlooking downtown Portland, the Willamette River, Mt .Hood and Mount St. Helens. The design elements play off the notion of an urban escape.

Was quickly seated, attended to by waitstaff, and presented with excellent and imaginatively created dishes. The sushi was fresh and brilliantly seasoned. Noise level is a tad high and this is clearly a happening place on the Portland food scene.

What a wonderful way to enjoy the city while enjoying time with friends over drinks or dinner. We actually liked having drinks and dessert the most. The service is top notch. Atmosphere makes this a unique venue for the downtown community.

Fusion food IS Portland, and this is no exception. It’s a rooftop restaurant where you can go outside to the rooftop lounge and view the city. Upon arrival, the decor is such that you feel like you are boarding a spaceship. The fishes arrive as they re made and we kept ordering way more than we needed as they were so good.

Spent an evening with family enjoying delicious eats on their outdoor seating area several weeks ago. Everything was most excellent and the view is to die for.

If you're looking for a cool place to sit down for some decent food, this is the place to go. Great views, ambiance, cocktails, and service make you comfortable. However, after reading all the reviews I expected the food to be amazing. While the food was decent, it lacked a strong backbone in terms of flavor. The menu items seemed safe and, unfortuneately, rather boring. Presentation was nice, but the flavor behind it is lacking. I actually feel bad writing this review because everyone was so nice and the place is pretty cool... but it doesn't deserve 5 stars for the food.

Hi Jessica,

Thank you for taking the time to reach out! I will make sure that your comments get back to the Chef and culinary team, we just changed our menu for the season last week so I know that they will appreciate the feedback.
Hopefully you will come see us again soon, perhaps for a drink on the West Deck in nicer weather next year!
Thank you again,

Best,
Jessica
