“Portland Japanese gardens shouldn't be missed”
Reviewed 28 February 2012

We've long visited the Portland Japanese gardens over many years and take all of our out of town friends and family who come to Portland for a trip up to these gardens at Washington Park. Our last visit in January 2012 was for the Japanese Oshogatsu New Year's celebration. That's one of the wonderful things about these gardens, that there are often festivals and events from Tea Ceremony to Caligraphy exhibitions, to Moon Parties ect during different times of the year, so it's wonderful to visit any time to get a taste of Japanese culture as well. The changing seasons also can create an entirely different atmosphere from lush summer flowers and trees to the more barren branches in Winter time. It's a very peaceful and serene garden that you can stroll along and enjoy the various different designs as well as see a wonderful view of Mt. Hood on clear days. Having spent a considerable time living in Japan and seeing some of the truly beautiful and ancient gardens there, I'd say this is a really nice example of an authentic garden outside of Japan. It gives you that zen frame of mind that we could all use more of in our busy daily lives. Great for children, and adults alike. Definitely don't miss this wonderful place.

“The perfect place to find serenity”
Reviewed 27 February 2012

Admittedly, I'm far from a horticulturalist or Japanese garden expert. I just love coming here. It is always so peaceful and so beautiful - the staff does a tremendous job of maintaining it throughout the seasons. On a clear day it gives you a spectacular view of Mt Hood, but even on rainy days in winter it can be a good place to walk around and silently meditate. I haven't had a chance to go to any of the workshops they put on and I hear there are some great yoga classes that take place up there as well. This is one of the few places I recommend to all of the out-of-town visitors I run into.

“Lovely garden”
Reviewed 27 February 2012

Visited in late spring and early summer when flowers/bushes were in bloom. It is well taken care of, small, but still very nice. Brought visitors from out of town and they thought it was a very nice garden. Their pictures came out quite nice and I would have thought it was someplace else if I did not know better.
