“Lovely location, excellent food.”
Reviewed 28 January 2012

Having read other reviews, before buying a 'deal' for a 2 night stay I was uncertain quite what to expect. The reviews are accurate and fair, this is a lovely building, with some quality furnishings, and with a little attention could be a great hotel, but the cleaning and hospitality leaves a bit to be desired, empty tissue boxes, someone else's breath freshner mints in a drawer, a whirlpool bath that looked like a Victorian surgeon's equipment and a (dated) wash basin, with stiff almost unturnable taps, with old nail varnish on the cold tap. The cleaning needs to step up a gear or two, everything just wasn't quite fresh and new feeling. On a positive note, Martin is a delight, and took very good care of us, as our booking had been mysteriously altered, so we arrived "unexpectedly" as it were. He sorted out the heating in the room and soon the' Badger' room was cosy as toast. The food in the restaurant was very good, but the place was almost empty, and I think a review of the pricing structure would see the place filled, it could easily be one of the best places to eat in the area, just so expensive, compared to other restaurants in the locality. Also sort out the plants, which seem to have just collapsed round the edge of the Orangery - dead strelitzia are somewhat off putting at breakfast. The hotel is delightfully situated with lovely views from our room, with pheasants and buzzards showing off in the field, and goats and a pony in the paddock. Please look at the rooms as visitors would, update the info, throw out some of the dead apppliances and empty writing cases etc, get out the Brasso, and the Jif, and make this the little gem it could be. Oh and hang onto Martin, he's a keeper!!

Room Tip: Badger had lovely views, and spacious, but only a double bed!

Sunday lunch here was the first visit for several months to one of our favourite restaurants. The food didn't didn't disappoint; the chef here is still at the top of his (her?) game. Beautifully moist, tender lamb, succulent beef, great starters and puds. The arrival of a pre-dessert was perhaps a step too far: like the pre-starter it was full of flavour, but maybe a fraction too creamy. But oh dear, how the serving staff failed to measure up. On arrival our group of four was shepherded into a narrow area next to the bar, having to move our own chairs and table into a row that impeded conversation. When we saw another group going into the restaurant we moved to their table. A waiter arrived to take our drinks order, and departed leaving us confronting the debris from the previous inhabitants. I could go on. But once again, a potentially enjoyable experience - and the talents of a capable chef - were let down by an inadequately trained support team. My average score is exactly that - one for the service, five for the food. I just hope this review will provide food for thought...

Thank you for taking the time to make your comments.

I will make sure we focus more on our service standards. We have a new team in position and many of them have had no experience in working in a restaurant. It just takes a little time for them to learn the many aspects of restaurant service and to become confident. Chef has taken on board your comments and thanks you for them.

The next time we see you. I hope we will have managed to improve our levels of service in the restaurant.

I booked this as it was close to the Cosford RAF Museum and i must pat myself on the back for the selection!

We had the leighton suite, which is more like a suite you see in the movies or a one bedroom flat minus the kitchen as it had a totally separate lounge. The rooms were huge; the owners could easily turn this into 2 separate rooms with a shared bathroom (please don't though!!!!) the bathroom with separate (very hot) shower, jaquzzi bath and height adjustable sink was very well fitted.

We ate at the restauraunt and like some have stated it can seem expensive however THIS IS NOT chain pub microwave food so you pay for what you get! This is as close to Master Chef food you'll get for £15 per main. Although I went for the steak and you could have cut it with a blunt spoon, absolutely perfect. I even had a desert - which I never do! - Pear, Fig & Ginger sable..............

The location is perfect for those fancying a quiet get away or for those who don't mind driving an extra 15 mins from the motorway to stay somewhere nice rather than a chain hotel.......

If I was the hotel inspector like some reviewers appear to be here then you could find minor faults but the bottom line I felt they could have charged a lot more for my room but sssshhhh!!!!!

Also there was a vegiterian we saw at breakfast and the chef asked if they were dinning in again; if so he could make something different as the menu is small. I thought this act of customer service summed the place up nicely.

To get the leighton suite again, on a summers eve, in your private garden overlooking the fields having a wee glass of wine from the extensive wine list would just be a moment to treasure forever............

Room Tip: Cheat, lie beg, steal to get the lieghton suite in summer,

We held our wedding reception here and it did not let us down. We feel it's a real gem of a venue with such a lovely setting and the food and service on the day was excellent.

A couple of the bedrooms need a bit of updating but on the whole we really liked them, they have character, unique furniture, excellent quality towels and toiletries and most are lovely and spacious which is so nice compared to the growing number of chain hotels. Th only slight negative was a couple of our overnight guests reported that there was no hot water in their shower.

We both felt we could not have picked a better place for our wedding reception and the photos we have are amazing due to the setting.
