We stayed here as we were cycling along the Ridgeway. Despite arriving a little scruffy in our cycling gear the welcome was warm and the staff were very helpful and friendly. We had a great meal round the corner at the Thai Restaurant and arrived back as the last orders were going on in the pub downstairs. We could hear the stragglers in the pub garden below the window, but this was to be expected.
The full English the next day was served in a first floor dining room with a lovely view over the town square. We will come again and enjoyed our stay in this historic pub.

I am a Business Traveller and my review is based as such, I am not looking at the decor and whether it is this season etc my review is based on how it fits around me and my needs.

I have stayed here many times over the last five years i am writing a review now as things have changed so much in that time and they continue to do so.
over the last 12 months approximately the hotel has been undergoing steady improvements in every department. This is still on going so all rooms are not the same.
Yes parking can be pain but only if you let it, the local Civic Car Park is only a 100m away to the rear and is easy to find and the rates are cheap. with free over night (from 5pm i think) but make sure your gone by 08.00hrs or you will get a ticket or do as i do and pay the night before just in case i think it was 60p for an hour (9.00am) just in case or £1 to take your 11.00am.(the machine is a registration number entry one and not qwerty) getting out around the school run time can be slow as its next to King Alfred's School.
There is limited free parking in the market square to the front and as the name suggest there is a now only a small market held twice a week Wednesday and Saturday, so don't park there the night before these days or you may have a stall pitched on/around your car. There is i believe a two hour max stay but i have found this is only enforced during working hours and not over night
The Rooms:
Varied is the best way to describe. They are all undergoing improvements but are to date at different stages. Rooms to the rear tend be quieter (but smaller) as there can be noise from the front facing (revelers especially at weekends) and near to the kitchen (chat, music, extractor) this is mainly an issue in the summer due the warmth of the rooms the windows only let so much air in due to the fire doors preventing the flow.
I am not sure how many beds have been changed but i believe its now most. before Keith and Jo got their hands on them the floor was more comfortable. they now all have new duvets and pillows too making the comfort as good as any four star. All rooms have also had the old portable tv replaced with a flat screen tv with free view so a good selection. The TV isn't a cinema but is big enough for a bedroom. Free Wi-fi is available via a ticket from reception so is easy to set up. The service is varied i expect depending on demand so it can be slow but ok for surfing and emails but not streaming a movie or iplayer. there is a good selection of tea and coffee and descent packet of biscuits or two
The Bathrooms are as varied as the rooms which are also now being sorted room by room.
I am a shower person and these vary from perfect to ok, i find the cleaning doesn't appear to include the shower heads and with 30 seconds of attention to the rubber outlets the flow is restored and well worth the time.I have found the lower the room the better the flow (greater water head i expect) I have always found them clean and the towels excellent the free shampoo isn't the best but ok if you have forgot yours the soap is spot on.
The plumbing in some rooms can be interesting but this isn't a new installation the hot is very hot and can spurt a bit out of the tap on the initial turn. Rooms with a bath tend to have a hand held shower which are now being replaced. Again this is on going so will depend on the room. Overall i would say you will get at least the best of one thing in one room but i haven't found one room where everything is perfect yet.
Breakfast:
Held in what was both the Breakfast & Dining Room on the first floor.Depending on the numbers in this varies from ordering cooked food at the table (cereal bar and juice at the far end of the room) to a cooked help yourself buffet.
Services is very good and friendly i have had the pleasure of meeting the ever dependable Emma on many a morning in the last 8 months. come rain or snow, she is there loud but there!Reminds me of Nora batty at times without the stockings. The Breakfast is of a very good quality and when ordering the portions are of a very good size. The buffet obviously you can be as big a pig as you want.
Dining:
Well what can say here, this is the biggest improvement of all. not only the new dining Room/area downstairs next to reception but the quality of the food is superb. Service is spot on and a vast selection to cater from the smallest to the biggest appetite.prices vary accordingly but if you go for the top end you are in my opinion being slightly under charged (£13mark)for what you are getting which tends to be locally produced meat. I would eat here even if i wasn't staying and people do. I was one of the first to sample the delights and finding a table was easy when it first opened. in the last six months it has always been busy when i have dined; you can also eat the same menu in the bar.Be aware there is no food on Sunday Evenings but plenty of external options.
Location.
About 15-20 mins from Didcot Station for a fast (40min) London service. 10-15 mins from the A34 to go either north to Oxford (25mins) or south towards the M4 (Reading 35mins,Newbury20mins etc). your 35 mins from Swindon via the A417/A420 I could go on!
Overall you are definitely getting value for money what ever room. It goes without saying the better the room the better the value and these are improving all the time .so i expect the prices will eventually have to go up to pay for the improvements to some rooms. It ticks all my boxes and is definitely the friendliest hotel I stay in and I stay in one somewhere in the country every day of the working week and often the weekend too. If your not happy be polite and explain and they will bend over backwards to sort it but if they don't know they cant help.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front are larger and lighter and airy but can be noisy. Rooms at the rear are quieter b...

Worked round the corner at autotype, rooms very nice, good service, food very expencive went out to the bell for food. parking can be a problem. free wifi ok when you can get on it and very slow. Another brekfast buffet, sopose it saves on the staff wages. all in all a good stay, not much better than a b&b though

Excellent staff, great service but unfortunately the room we were in had does not appear to have been refurbished recently.
