We found Croft Cottage on line and booked it. It was everything that it said it was, well equipped and a comfortable place to stay. What the description did not say however was just how peaceful the place really is. No noise or light pollution. There was the odd glider passing overhead but that was about all. We spotted a red squirrel nearby and some deer on the hill.
The walks in the wild country around the College Valley (two or three miles away) can be as gentle or as challenging as you want. Every summit seems to have an ancient hill fort on it. And the empty local roads must be some of the best road cycling in England.
Half an hour's drive got us to the coast, with Holy Island, an amazing sandy beach at Banburgh, and the wildlife on the Farne Islands.
It is hard to imagine a better combination of accessibility and tranquility. We will certainly go backMore
