The reviews suggested that The Frenchgate would be good but it exceeds all our expectations. The dinner was sublime and there was a very wide choice for my wife who is gluten intolerant. Her venison and my balotine of pheasant were as good as anything we have eaten in a long time. David also extended my appreciation of gin with a Colombian one that he had made subtle additions to.

We stayed here for a night on our way up to Edinburgh and the service from David and his team was 1st class. We had our evening meal in the restaurant, the menu choice was excellent and the food was outstanding. We’ll certainly be back and would highly recommend - keep up the good work!!

Absolutely fab hotel! Myself and husband had the cottage room... FAB! Huge comfy bed... fab Victorian bath!! Only disappointment was having to pay £15 each for a breakfast when we were under the impression it was in with the price of the room.. for £124 for one night you’d think breakfast would be included! Would definitely stay again though...

We stayed for one night for my birthday in this hotel not too far from home. The weather was terrible - rained for both days - so I can only think this was why the hotel and restaurant were so quiet - it deserves to be full every night. Instead of an intended walk up Swaledale, we spent the day at the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle which was a good decision, then made our way back to the hotel at Richmond where we were given a very warm welcome and shown all the details of the room. This proved very comfortable as did the lovely hotel lounge with a toasty wood burner - and overall not the bland designs you find elsewhere. Thankfully umbrellas were leant to allow us a quick look round Richmond in the rain. We returned to freshen up for a truly wonderful meal in the evening - well deserving of the AA 2 Rosette accreditation. Breakfast the next morning was also quite special with some more interesting choices than the usual full English - which was also available. We visited Ripon Cathedral and Workhouse Museum the next day on the way home. It is a pity that Richmond Castle is only open at weekends this time of year - and few of the local museums in Richmond were open - this can't help hotels - though in good weather Richmond and Swaledale are lovely. If you read the very few negative reviews of this hotel on this website - please don't let them put you off - they say more about the reviewers than the hotel!
