The village and Castle Inn buildings are delightful and a lovely place to visit. However its not possible to recommend the food or the service provided which is well below standard.
The Sunday roast beef was tough, breakfast was a shambles with no fruit, no brown bread and black pudding, limited milk supplied etc all of which was on the menu. On the second morning no lids on the tea pots as they couldn't be located! The breakfast area was not set up at 8.30am. Our twin room over the kitchen was of a good standard and no problem however room service had been forgotten and beds left unmade, no tea milk replacements provided or bathroom cleaned. The carpet on the staircase leading to the room was filthy. At the bottom of the staircase where the kitchen was located were stacked over flow items and rubbish from the kitchen. This is simply unacceptable. The door leading into the kitchen was dirty and staff often seen outside the exit fire door smoking and cigarette butts left on the floor. We are well travelled friends who often use Travel Zoo offers but this was the poorest standard of any venue so far encountered.I only wish I had taken photos.

Room Tip: Check out the area around the kitchen to see if cleanliness has been improved

Stayed in the Premier Room (1) which was comfortable and spacious as well as having an old world charm. Everything high quality and very clean. Made to feel very welcome and staff friendly and accommodating. Lots of choice on the menu for evening meal and food was great. One piece of advice for anyone with a deal including credit towards evening meal - check exactly what is included before ordering as we had to query our bill as they hadn't given us the full credit that our voucher implied. However this did not appear to be deliberate attempt to overcharge and boiled down to a lack of communication and the problem was solved amicably.

I've been to the Castle Inn a few times now and really enjoyed it. Good range of vegetarian options and staff always seem nice. Felt like we were being a bit rushed on the last visit but the food was still lovely.
I would definitely go again and recommend it to people when they're looking for somewhere to eat.
We went for my Gran's birthday and got a MASSIVE cocktail as a happy birthday present to her and it just made her day that they were so nice.
My only thing would be when we went this last time they seem to have changed the portion sizes and it's just too much. They were perfect sizing before hand but left so much food this last time.
A "nibble" of mozzarella sticks came out as 8 full sized ones with salad and a dip. The food was still lovely but the portions did need to be a bit smaller again for me.
With living locally I've only ever eaten there not stayed there. I am looking forward to going again for food.
