Owner description: The museum stands high on Castle Hill, in the shadow of the Castle Keep, an image which has dominated Clitheroe's skyline for over 800 years. The historic landmark of Clitheroe, in the heart of the Ribble Valley offers a day of exploration for all the family. Our intriguing galleries will take you on a journey through 350 million years of history, heritage and geology of the local area. We have lots of activities for children in the museum - a competition hunt, dressing-up costumes, explorer back-packs (with hat and magnifying glass), craft activities and various interactive displays. Come and enjoy a fun-filled day of exploration and learning.

I'll be honest here, right from the off.I can actually see this place from my house but I don't think I've been in the castle museum for 20 years...until recently.we go to the park all the time as the kids love it.if you combine the park and activities the castle has running all through the year, you could easily spend a good few hours in the grounds.it's a beautiful in the winter as it is in the summer!
The museum, well I was pleasantly surprised.there were sections on history, wildlife, geography and yes,the witches-but it did cover the folklore of the area, not just the witches.there is a hunt for the kids to do,so they have to find things and in the process the actually look at stuff! There's lots of interactive exhibits which we had a great time with....turns out I'm pretty hopeless on a xylophone! My daughter and son did the brass rubbings and of course the daughter did a brass rubbing of how to summon Beelzebub...son went for a knight.. there is also a section where the kids can dress up in traditional clothing, which they loved! The staff are knowledgeable and helpful, the museum is only small so you are never far away from someone to ask but it is packed with interesting stuff so that's lucky! The gift shop is only small but there's enough for you to pick up a momento.all in all,a great afternoon in the museum.I'd recommend the grounds,it's a brill place to let the kids run riot

Thank you for your wonderful review. We're glad that you enjoyed your visit to the museum. The competition hunt changes every month so you may want to come again in October when we will have a Halloween witch theme - children in fancy dress costume most welcome.

Great views from the top of the castle. Cafe and small Museum with Plenty of Art for the Art lovers.
Play area for the kids with a regular visit from from an Ice Cream van in the castle grounds. Public toilets on site, skate park and close to the local town amenities, bus routes and train station.

Set in a very nice village that is worth a look around. The castle itself is free to get to visit and has amazing views of the surrounding areas. The museum is worth a look and great for the kids as there are interactive exhibits for them. Lovely walks around the area.

Thank you for your review. The castle grounds provide a great play area for children to run around and let off steam and there is plenty inside the museum to keep them occupied as well.

Not a bad castle, smaller than we expected but lovely friendly staff, the pirate trail that runs during the summer holidays was a lovely activity and the kids play areas were nice enough too. Filled a couple of hours but we didn’t look round the whole of the grounds in terms of walking around as we’d climbed Pendle Hill and came past the castle on the way “home” so called in.

Thanks for posting a review. As you say, the museum has lots of fun activities to entertain the children on a wet day - dressing-up clothes, craft activities, brass-rubbings and a competition hunt.
