Taking friends away for their 40th Anniversary I was nervous at finding a hotel, but I should have had no worries booking The Marine Hotel at Tankerton approximately a mile from the centre of Whitstable. We had a friendly welcome as soon as we arrived and went to our rooms with a sea front view, there are quite a lot of stairs but they do have a disabled lift to the first floor. Our room was big and very well decorated, we had a small but adequate bathroom all looked as though it had been modernised and decorated in the last year. The view from the room was fantastic and we would definite like to revisit it in the Summer. There was a great choice for breakfast and it was all well cooked. It was a great place within easy access to explore wonderful Whitstable.

Room Tip: Ask for a seaview

This was our second stay at the Marine Hotel but I'm afraid we shall probably look for accommodation elsewhere next time we are in this area. We booked a superior sea view room - the same standard of room as on our previous visit. There is no doubt that these rooms have a glorious view. They are generally well appointed and tastefully decorated. I do not feel they are being maintained to a satisfactory level to warrant the title "superior" in anything other than the view. The paintwork is chipped and peeling in some of the bedrooms, some of the bathroom fittings are in need of replacement or repair. In the first room we were allocated the shower cubicle (no bath) was fitted with a small shower head ( of the type that you would usually hold in your hand rather than have as a permanent fixture in a superior room bathroom) it was not adjustable (broken) so you could not alter the direction. My husband is tall & he could not stand under it. The water pressure was OK if the water was cold but when warm (it never got hot) it was very low pressure. We reported this to reception on day 1 and were told it would be attended to. Needless to say it was not. So on day 2 we asked to move rooms. This room had a fixed shower over the bath. No separate shower cubicle. The bath enamel was chipped off in several areas in the bottom of the bath and also around the edge. The toilet seat was of the wrong size to fit that particular toilet style and was fixed at a jaunty angle. The hotel can be noisy. As others have commented it is popular for functions but noise is also transmitted by people walking across the bedroom floors on the second floor, so first floor rooms, certainly at the front, can have noise from the road, the bar, the function room or guests above if you are unlucky. So if a quiet room is important to you check out the TA room tips and request accordingly with the hotel. The hotel is very dog-friendly so don't be surprised by the dog bowls in the bar and lounges and dogs in many of the public areas. The hotel is well used by non residents. The bar is well run and friendly, breakfast is good, the evening meals both in the bar and the restaurant not so good. There are plenty of other places to eat so check out the TA suggestions rather than just planning to eat at this hotel if good food is important to you. We like Wheeler's Oyster bar for a special occasion but make sure you know the quirks of that establishment before you book and also the East Coast Dining Rooms which are a short walk through the car park at the rear of the Marine Hotel (or a drive round the block) are well worth a visit. The hotel staff are pleasant and friendly. Free WiFi is a decent speed. Room TVs can be small. There is limited parking at the front of the hotel and a large car park for guests to the rear (drive up the narrow gap by the tennis courts - it is not signposted on the road).

We stayed on night for a friends party. The Hotel is lovely, we stayed in room 1 it's huge, with a comfy bed and a large bathroom. There's no sea view from here but there's no need. If you want to see the sea go and sit out the front with a beer and enjoy the sea air. All the staff were polite and seemed happy in their work. The breakfast was plentiful and hot and tasty with plenty of choice. All in all a lovely night and wouldn't hesitate in staying again.

Work still being carried out. Very comfy and staff were lovely. Breakfast served at 730am so that was a let down when you left before that food yummy and mini bar in room was a plus. Parking was a nightmare. Overall comfortable and great experience

A busy hotel, recently refurbished; very comfortable bedrooms - some with balconies and wide views of the sea; excellent breakfasts, good restaurant (but on our visit not well patronised and so lacking in atmosphere); although outside of the centre of Whitstable - well situated especially for walkers/strollers; variable standards of service (from modest to excellent).
