Choosing the perfect place to stay at is a very difficult task, more so when you haven't visited the place and the sole reviews which you have to depend upon are the ones you read on the net. Thankfully, I managed to zero-in on Hotel Woodlands in Matheran based on the reviews on TripAdvisor - this shall go down as one of the best decisions that I've ever taken!
Cradled in the lap of nature, this British-age property is the perfect getaway for nature lovers (who wish to be cut-off from the hullabaloo which tourist spots are infamous for) and for foodies. True to its name, it is in the middle of nowhere (a fact that becomes more pronounced in the night) sorrounded by tall trees and filled with music emanating from monkeys, birds, insects, and the wind-chimes-like leaves.

Hotel Woodlands is situated on the main trail leading from Dasturi Naka (the point uptil where vehicles are allowed in Matheran) to the town center (the post office and railway station, in this case). You can either trek to the hotel or ride on a horse. Thenceforth, the market is a 15 minutes walk away.
There is a rustic charm associated with the property, and this hits you as soon as you enter the premesis. The huge verandah is the first thing you witness as you climb the stairs from the entrance - an ideal place to lounge around and relax. The office is a small room at one end of the porch, with a small library and a TV behind the counter is constantly abuzz while the staff keep themselves busy in delivering praiseworthy customer service. The pet dogs - Julie and Raja - are quite adorable and they keep strutting abou the place, wagging their tails, keeping monkeys at bay et al.

The rooms are decent and clean. Owining to the rains probably, the bedsheets might be damp and the room might smell a bit, but all you need to do is mention this to the staff and they make sure you get the best under the circumstances. The rooms have fans and air coolers but neither of these were required as it was pretty cold. The bathrooms aren't equipped with geysers, but piping hot water is available on demand.
Our room opened out onto a big balcony which offered a view of the dense forest behind the hotel - sitting there late in the night and gazing up at the few stars visible on cloudy nights or admiring the rain was quite different from the otherwise daily routine of being hooked to the laptop/phone and social netowrking.

Then comes the food. No reviews can do justice to the awesomeness of the home-like food on offer at Hotel Woodlands. It's simple, yummilicious and served in generous proportions (we were shameless enough to ask for second and third helpings a couple of times!). Breakfast on the first day was uttapam and sambar, chutney alongwith bread, butter, jam and delicious milky tea. Lunch and dinner on both days comprised of 2 sabjis (veggies), salad, rotis or pooris, rice, dal and pickle. Lunch was accompanied by a sweet dish, while dinner had an extra dish of starters (pakodas and bhajias, perfect for the rainy weather!). Breakfast on the second day was poha with bread, butter, jam and tea. Apart from this, tea is served 2 times in the day. For those in search for kebabs, continental food etc., visiting the market would be a better option. The food at Woodnlands got us too dreamy to venture out anywhere else :D

The weather was fantastic during our 2-nights' stay and it was raining cats and dogs. Since most people visit Matheran for the weekend and we had extended our stay to Monday, we were the only guests left at the hotel on Sunday night (who knows, even in the whole of Matheran). Walking back to the hotel from the market at 8 PM through the jungle was the adventure of a lifetime too - our torch light piercing through the thin clouds floating around in the darkness was the only source of light for miles, and we encountered not a single soul till we reached the hotel. Woah. This is called pitch dark!

A special mention to the manager Mr. Unnikrishnan and his staff comprising of Raju, Kishore and Mahendra who left no stone unturned in their service to us. We were helped in all regards, be it suggesting places to visit, negotiating fares with horsemen or getting good deals with porters and tour guides. Very grateful to them for making our stay so special and memorable.

Sure to stay at Hotel Woodlands everytime I visit Matheran henceforth.
Will share photographs soon.

Room tip: Choose a room towards the back of the hotel with a decent-sized balcony with a view of the forest.

Matheran is known for its pollution-free pristine forests. Hotel Woodlands adds to this magic with its location far from the madding crowd of the railway station and market on the main road. True to its name, this beautiful old Parsi property is nestled right in the midst of the evergreen woods. The rooms are simple and elegant, the food – umm – finger-licking and unending in portions, and the hospitality very warm. At an average of Rs 1000 per day per person including food, it turns out to be most reasonable for a middle-level travel-enthusiast family wanting to spend a short leisurely and peaceful holiday. But most of all, what caught my eye and stole my heart was the small library in the office room. Between the long morning walks and horse-rides and chatting with my co-travelers, I found out time to read a Marquez novel. Thank You Woodlands!

very good location, budget hotel and helpful staff. Food was awesome, we really enjoyed the food. Hotel looks little old, though they need to renovate the rooms a little, but clean and peaceful. away from market and crowd, so no noise. Be sure carry some cash with you, as the ATM machine in matheran never works. Hotel management helped us in that as well, we had very little cash for shopping, so manager asked us to swipe in his machine and he gave us cash. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Value for Money Hotel. Food is better than Excellent. Service is very good. Staff Co-operative. Necessary Amenities available like Carrom, Badminton, TT and also playing area for small children. Nice Location about 15 minutes from the Railway Station and adjacent to the railway track. Rooms are good both A/C & Non A/C. Cleanliness has been maintained though being a hotel in the woods which is also a plus point.
All in All a Very good Family Budget hotel to stay with 4/5 rating..
