Lovely peaceful stay, bedroom immaculate, bathroom immaculate, personal opinion, due to age of hotel, too dark in the dining area for us but changing it would ruin the ambience. Staff so helpful and attentive. Food excellent value.

Stayed here for 2 nights. Room was spacious, bed comfortable, shower and TV not the best. I'm not a fan of carvery restaurants but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and freshness of the food. Breakfast was good and service was great.

A group of friends and I had lunch here today and it was a shambles. They clearly take on far too many bookings than what they can actually handle at one time, the serving area is not big enough to cater for more than 8/10 people without it being very congested. The staff also appeared to be very stressed and not able to cope with such big numbers.
When we were able to get our food it was average and in my opinion not worth a special trip unless you are local.
This place either needs much better management operationally (perhaps a table by table system) or a better booking system where less tables are seated at once.

Four of us dined here on a Friday lunch time. There is a reasonable varied choice of food on the menu.
The proposition is a Traditional Carvery offering the usual joints. There is also the option to select other dishes including fish.
There is a lot of to-ing and fro-ing required as orders for food are taken at the carvery not at the table.
The food was brought to the table by a waiter/ waitress after the selection of vegetables gave been made.
I chose Lambs liver and bacon with vegetables. It was very good in terms of quality of the meat and crispness and freshness of the vegetables.
Would have awarded an excellent if the service proposition was more customer focused and less moving around.

The old part of the Hotel including the dining rooms are tastefully and well appointed.

After a long debate in the car where we should go for a bit of dinner on our way home, I suggested The Old Tolegate as we had enjoyable meals here many many years ago. Arrived, waitress very pleasant, we received our drinks and off we headed to the carvery. Well the starter range interesting looked nice but we thought we would skip that and just got the main meal, 2 slices of meat (thin) then you are asked what veg you would like, we chose and our food was delivered to our table. The food was completely tasteless, the meat was the only good thing on the plate! Stuffing was basically paxo, potatoes were dried out, vegetables were limp but the gravy was actually tasty. So the pudding selection was looking like leftovers from a children's party at this stage we decided to leave. There was no love in preparing and making this food, we will not return, what has happened to this restaurant, it used to be amazing!
