Owner description: Atmospheric farmhouse full of quirky objects and fascinating stories The Brownes of Townend in the Troutbeck Valley were just an ordinary farming family: but their home and belongings bring to life more than 400 years of extraordinary stories. As you approach Townend - a traditional Lake District stone and slate farmhouse, you'll understand why Beatrix Potter described Troutbeck Valley as her favourite. Once inside, you are welcomed into the farmhouse kitchen with a real fire - burning most afternoons - and a quirky collection of domestic tools. Throughout the house, intricately carved furniture provides a window into the personality of George Browne. The library contains the family’s well-used collection of books, including 45 that are the only remaining copies in the world. Outside, the colourful cottage-style garden is a lovely place to while away some time among the flowers.

Went on the guided tour which was excellent and again a couple of days later for a more leisurely look round. I really recommend the tour to find out how the people lived.

Visited here on a rainy day in troutbeck. Enjoyed looking at the original features and listening to the very informative staff describing life as it would have been in the house in days gone by. Bear in mind that it's not very accessible for those with a disability due to steep stairs and original floors.

A picturesque stone and slate Townend house, owned by the Browne family of yeoman farmers for more than 400 years and they ammassed their literature collection over generations.

The property and its 1,500 book library are now in the care of the National Trust. A warm welcome by the team and the smell of the fire all helped make this a worthwhile visit.

The library is very interesting with 45 books that have never been seen anywhere in the world before on topics like law and religion, but the real gems are the ,Chapbooks'

They often contained rather saucy and even rude tales, which were found to be very amusing by their 18th century readers.

Small but worth while.

First visit for us but will definitely return, as we missed the official tour. Having said that there were plenty of guides on hand to fill us with details about the house and it's history; Fred was particularly informative! We arrived before opening at 1pm and so took a short stroll down into Troutbeck to partake of coffee and cake at the Old post office tea room ( reviewed separately). Townend is absolutely worth the visit! Highly recommended x
