We picked this hotel as Friday night stopover on the way further north and it was advertised as dog friendly. Many hotels are more dog ‘tolerant’ than friendly but we were made to feel very welcome. The hotel has a deceptively large garden with a long lawn to exercise the dog on in the morning.
The hotel had a slightly scruffy appearance from the outside, especially entering from the car park. There were also a LOT of uncollected glasses and full ashtrays on the tables on the patio outside the bar. However, once inside it was very clean and generally smart. The bedroom was very clean and comfortable and had a wonderful view.
We did not have dinner as we had to go out, but the menu looked reasonable with an interesting wine list and good stocked bar. Breakfast was very good, but the ‘butter’ was definitely not butter, despite the waitress’s assertions to the contrary.
Room for improvement in some areas, but we had a very pleasant stay and would certainly stay again if in the area.

Room Tip: Ask for 'sea' view!

Thank you for taking the time to review, we are pleased that you had a pleasant stay. We are a very dog friendly hotel and we enjoy welcoming all kinds of dogs into the hotel.
We do apologise for the appearance of the hotel on the outside, we have been waiting for several weeks now for the building to be painted, however with the rainy weather we get in the South Lakes the painters haven't been able to paint the building quite yet!
We don't normally have 'LOTS' of glasses and full ashtrays in the garden and we do try to keep on top of everything as much as we can, you may have caught us on a busy spell where we weren't quite able to get out to the garden straight away to collect the glasses.
The butter we use is full fat butter from the local area, apologies that you felt it was not butter but we only serve the best local products for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We are on a journey of improvement at the hotel but considering we have only been here 4 months, we have already made some major changes.... so watch this space! :)

Stayed before dining in Cartmel (l'enclume). Clean, beautiful location overlooking inlet of Morecambe Bay. Friendly accommodating staff. Great bed, even better freshly cooked English Breakfast. Thoroughly recommend. Had there been morning papers I would have given it a 5 star rating.

This was our fifth visit to The Uplands (first with new owners James and Steph) we stayed for three nights with Ruby our Irish Setter and we all had a lovely time. James and Steph made us feel very welcome, chatting to us and recommending places to visit. We had dinner throughout the duration of our stay and wasn't disappointed the food was lovely, although my favourite was the Sunday lunch. Breakfast was delicious, served by Linda a very cheerful lady who couldn't do enough for us. The views from our room were magnificent overlooking the bay. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, thank you and we'll see you in November.

on arriving at the front of the hotel i was a bit shocked at the entrance there was a quaint little court yard that was need of a tidy up it could look so lovely this is your first impression which was not a good one. The bar and restaurant decor looks lovely. staff were lovely. our room was very clean but the decor looked dated. reading other reviews i see they are slowly refurbishing, I really would start with the entrance court yard . i just could not figure out why this entrance courtyard was the way it was,

Thank you for your review, we apologise for the look of the hotel at the front currently. We are in the process of removing all the ivy (which has also taken some of the building render off at the same time!) to have it painted next week. Apologise if we didn't mention this to you, it has been delayed in recent weeks due to lack of good consistant weather. In the next couple of weeks, we hope there will be a major difference to how the building looks from the outside. We are doing what we can at the moment to keep the hotel clean, smart and as enjoyable as possible for our guests until we can start our bedroom refits in the new year. Having said that, we do have 3 fully refurbished superior rooms that can be booked at the hotel. We have now been at the hotel for 4 months and have made some major improvements which we hope our guests will appreciate.
We hope to see you again in the future.

Felt very comfortable at this place.The evening meals were tasty particularly the lamb and beef.
Very polite waitresses on hand too.
Would return.
Friendly suggestion-towel rail or hooks needed for our shower room would be helpful.

Thank you for the towel rail suggestion - we are planning to refit several rooms in the new year but will look to add as a temporary solution in the interim.
