I think above all I want to comment on the lovely friendly welcome of all the staff! Nothing was too much for them & they wanted to make us feel at home & were very attentive. It had been a freezing weekend & we were certainly sheltered from the elements.
We had a lovely dinner on our first night & appreciated trying the different guest ales. The locals too were engaging! One couple wanted to try drinking from the 'yard of ale' & nothing was too much trouble for the staff!
The breakfast was well presented the next morning, being good & hearty. Lovely Cappuccinos too. (The second morning when the guilt hit - too much food! we went straight across the road in to the bakery for a croissant!)

We slept well even thought we were above a bar! And really, its hard to find fault! It is a bit rustic - but that is what one would expect of such an old place & a creaking board is part of the charm - why else would one stay there!

We would throughly recommend if not only because of the welcome!

While staying in Broughton, the Black Cock offers not only the fotty in the back room but a great selection of real ales & good food. Ideal for walking parties and I believe good accomodation. The quaint olde worlde surroundings really make you feel at home.

A lovely friendly little pub serving excellent home made food. Very friendly staff and locals making you feel so welcome. Also dog friendly. Has a very interesting history with pictures depicting same. Would highly recommend and we are returning this year for more of the good food and friendly atmosphere.

We stayed on a Saturday night. Our room was very cosy and characterful and we enjoyed a good meal at dinner time. It was good value for money but felt considerably let down that no one told us about the live music until they had taken full payment for our stay and taken us up to our room. We were told there would be a live singer on until 11/12ish which we didn't think would be bad, until we later realised that it was directly underneath our room. We tried to stay up, but after a long walk we were exhausted and just wanted to rest. We tried to watch a film in our room but the noise was too loud downstairs to even hear the TV. The music didn't stop until 1.30am and there were a couple directly outside our window arguing for a good half an hour telling each other to 'F off'. We finally got to sleep and slept very well, although the bed could do with tightening up as it was very rickety and wobbly! They might also want to ask performing acts to turn down the bass on their speakers as the light fittings on the walls behind the bed were vibrating with the bass throughout every song and made an irritating sound. No one was around when we left so we left our room key with another couple having breakfast. I'd recommend staff giving room bookings advance warning of live music, particularly if they are staying in the room directly above where the music will be. We live in a pub so understand that music on a Saturday night is normal, but so is informing the guests before they arrive. We always contact bookings as soon as they come in from Booking, com to tell them if there will be live music or any parties/disruption etc so that they know what to expect. Might not hurt to ask the bar man to give a smile every once in a while too...

Room Tip: don't have room 2 if they have live music & you want to sleep before 1.30am
