We stayed in a 2bdr first floor walk out to the beach room. Akumal is one of my favorite places. The location of the hotel is great. The first floor units can't be beat as you just walk out to Half Moon Bay's beautiful beach. The unit was ample. We had a late check in and the key was left with the night security.

We did find the units needed maintenance as we encountered a couple of issues: moldy pack and play for our toddler, water seeping from the floor in the kitchen.

Room Tip: first floor with walkout to the beach.

The Good: Our hotel room had everything we could need: unlimited purified water, safe, hammock, fan, a/c, beach towels. Location is the best on Half Moon Bay in my opinion; snorkeling is right outside your door. Front desk staff was great. Would definitely stay here again but get a larger room next time.
The Bad: Weather conditions have created an inundation of sargassum on the beaches. Workers toiled all day every day to remove the stuff but it seems to be endless at this point. Every day brings new piles of the stuff. If you don't mind wading through 10 feet or so of it to get to good snorkeling, you'll be reasonably happy.
The Ugly: Unfortunately, La Buena Vida is only one of two restaurants within walking distance and is on del Sol's property. While their food is pretty good, especially breakfast, some of the bartenders and wait staff at night are incredibly rude. They ruined anything we enjoyed about the restaurant. Would never go back there.

Just returned from a week at Del Sol. The property was as expected. It is an older resort. The rooms were clean and comfortable. We rented a three bedroom condo plenty of room for the six of us. The cleaning service was great.

The problem is that the seaweed situation makes the beach unswimable. It is horrific! mounds and mounds of seaweed. And it stinks. We chose Del Sol because we wanted to be able to swim right from our resort and not have to go anywhere. This was not possible. We had to go to the public beach. I get it, it’s nature no one can control that. However, at the all inclusives in Akumal The seaweed was kept more in control. And some other areas near Playa were using tractors to remove it. In our area there were a men working on it with shovels and wheelbarrows, but the problem is so out of control that they barely made a dent.

My other main complaint is in regards to the pool. The pool is advertised as being part of the resort. But the pool is also in the La Buena Vida restaurant. When we went down to the pool my husband was told he could not bring his beer in and that he had to buy beer from the restaurant. We thought this was absolutely ridiculous. First of all if the pool is part of the resort that we are paying to stay at we should be able to bring beer to it. If it is not, and instead it is considered part of the restaurant then they should not advertise that the resort has a pool. Furthermore, we ate at that restaurant several times during the week and bought drinks at the pool and spent hundreds of dollars. Not allowing my husband to bring a couple beers in, beers he bought at their corner store, was total BS.

Our main floor 2 bedroom condo was quiet and peaceful. To be able to walk out right onto the sand every morning was a dream. Two hammocks right on the patio were comfortable and perfect for relaxing in the sun.

We had planned to stay at the hotel for one week. When we arrived a very pleasant and helpful young fellow helped us at the front desk. Our room was a VERY small ocean front room approximately 20 feet from the ocean, however the ocean front was covered with so much seaweed and the few men that were trying to shovel it away could not make a dent in it!!!! it made going into the water no possible and the smell was horrible. We asked for our reservation to be changed/canceled as it was not possible to stay there. It could have been ok in the room if there was not the hugh seaweed problem. The hotel did agreed to refund our payment.

Thank you for your comments about Del Sol. We agree the rooms are small compared to standard hotel rooms. We are sorry the seaweed situation occurred during your stay.

Regarding the seaweed - Akumal as well as most areas along the Caribbean coast are experiencing a natural accumulation of large quantities of seaweed recently. Also known as sargassum, it washes up to the shore and accumulates on the beaches. This can be caused by unfavorable wind and water currents and warming sea temperatures.

We understand how important it is to have clean beaches for our guests despite what nature sends our way. Del Sol has brought in additional staff to assist in the clean up effort to clear the beaches and remove the piles of sargassum each day. This is a time consuming and labor intensive job.

We hope you can return sometime to the Akumal area to enjoy its beauty. Thank you again for your comments.
Because Half Moon Bay is environmentally protected as a live marine sanctuary for nesting sea turtles no heavy machinery is permitted on the beach to aid in the removal operations.
