My husband's business sends him here annually for seminar. After each event at Shell Island, he would insist I schedule a time when I could join him. After retirement from military service, and part-time employment at the VA, we can enjoy Shell Island Resort together. What an experience I had been missing! From the drive to Wilmington to the end of Shell Island, the exquisite tropical entry immediately gives you a sense of Oceana. Every booking gives each person or family ocean-front balconies. Beautifully decorated, generously and thoughtfully appropriated rooms allow early risers to easily enjoy sunrises on the ocean. Others can watch a panoply of activity at sea, while utilizing a private eat-in-kitchen with a view. This is a gift I give to myself each year. The staff are gracious, kind, and helpful. I am reluctant to leave and we book one extra day for ourselves outside of commitments to savor the experience and the great service we receive. Thanks to the staff for our Oasis!

Room Tip: If you love looking at the pool there are internal rooms that face the pool on various levels which you can request at time of booking.

The view of the beach is fantastic, all suites face the ocean. However, 2 out of the 3 suites we were assigned were filthy. I have added photos with this review. There was questionable animal waste under the bed, and behind & under the furniture had not been cleaned for quite some time, the provided pots & pans had not been cleaned prior to being put away, and still contained sticky thick oil of some kind. Please see photos of the way we found them, and after we cleaned them. There was so much filth around the front door it was unbelievable. Further, although the rooms were recleaned at our request upon check-in, and an apology given by housekeeping; the front desk did not seem to care and we never heard from management although we requested to do so.

This hotel is fine. Clean with a nice pool for the kids and easy access to the beach. We like staying here because the beach at this end is much less crowded and the tidal pools and sand dunes at the north tip are really fun for the kids.
I interacted with the front desk staff over a few minor issues and they were great (especially Richard) which makes all the difference.
Yes the water in the rooms has a strong sulfur smell so be prepared (bring your own bottled water). And definitely request a high level room for better views (we were in 208 which was right over the bar but things quiet down by 10 pm every night. But this was a deluxe king suite. Definitely NOT worth the extra cost)
Overall we had a great stay and will definitely be back.

The view is spectacular of the ocean in the front and the marsh area in back. We were in room 710. Nice room with two bathrooms, 1 tub/shower, balcony looking out on the ocean. The hotel staff was excellent. The major issue is with the water. Very heavy sulfur smell especially when the tub/shower is used. Also, the soundproofing is minimal. We could hear the people talking in normal volume next door. The exercise room across the hall from our room is very small and we could hear the treadmill being used at 6:30 am. Nice parking garage. With the water issue we could only give the property a 3-star rating.

Room Tip: Not sure if all rooms have poor sound proofing.

The hotel is one star but the location is five so I gave it a two. This hotel is far outdated and badly maintained. When we arrived in the first room, it smelled terrible. They moved us to another room where the refrigerator did not work, the AC could not be adjusted but most of all, the water smells like rotten eggs. Taking a bath was a very uncomfortable experience. In addition although they charge a resort fee, the gym was completely closed and beach chairs are not included and the towels are slightly larger than hand towels.
That being said the location on a beautiful peninsula is fantastic and the beach and sand are wonderful.
