Situated in a lovely old mansion, the inside is as grand as the outside. Wonderful salads for a first course. The summer pasta was loaded with duck, chicken sausage and veggies. The lamb rack was tender and tasty. Swordfish special a hit. Dinners served with great veggies. Nice bread, small parking lot. Pricey but worth the cost.

Thank mpd

We came here about 2 years ago for Valentines Day. I thought and so did my bf that the food was not really good, the service was sub-standard and it was way too expensive. I would really suggest the 42'nd Street Oyster Bar over this any time.

I have moved away and unfortunately have not been able to duplicate the Second Empire experience. There are very few dining venues which offer the array of foods and atmosphere of this Raleigh treasure. We enjoyed the downstairs bar as well as celebrating special nights in the main dining rooms.
Service and offerings are top notch. 100 restaurants later Second Empire is still a wonderful memory.

I'm not a food connoisseur but I like what I like. Upstairs reminds me of an elegant French restaurant and it's a great place for an anniversary or dinner to impress. But even more surprising is the basement area where you can get the same food, completely different ambiance, but at a lower price. Upstairs you need to dress up (IMHO).
Downstairs is much more laid back.
