Lake James State Park
Ranked #2 of 5 things to do in Nebo

If you enjoy the outdoors, Lake James is a must. Swimming, kayaking, hiking, fishing and the list goes on. We fish from our kayaks when weather permits and Lake James is one of our favorite lakes. There are plenty of picnic areas there too, so a lunch supplies are always on our packing list. The swimming area at Paddy Creek looks like a beach and perfect even for very small children. Love this place and it continues to get updated regularly.

Camped here in November, my wife and I were just traveling around and camping somewhere new every night and we happened upon this place. The park has two campgrounds. One is for car campers. While the campsites looked well maintained, they were too close to one another and I wouldn't recommend staying there unless you are just looking for a cheap place to sleep. This campsite didn't really offer any nice views, but it was close to hiking trails.

The walk-in campsite at the Catawaba side of the park was really nice. You have to carry all your gear in, and it's about a quarter to half mile trek, but there are wheelbarrows available to help. The sites are a decent distance from each other, but still close enough to hear your neighbors. Fortunately there were only three sites out of twenty in use so it wasn't an issue. These sites have decent views of the lake, and the site we stayed at (#6) was close enough to the lake that we could have fished from our campsite.

Both campgrounds have hot showers and flush toilets available.

The title really says it all. Had a nice 5mile hike around the lake, linking up three trails....Homestead, Paddy's and Mill Creek Loop. We didn't see one other hiker the entire time. The trail is marked moderate, but I think that is a little harsh. The trail is almost perfectly groomed with no large rocks or roots and the topography flows gently around the lake. Beautiful views of the lake at some points. The bathroom facilities were spotless and I almost felt back taking my sweaty self into them for a quick natural break. Parking was ample and it's easy to find. A+ park

Spent the weekend at the new Paddy's Creek section for "car camping." Overall, a pleasant experience.

*This is a new camping area, so the bath facilities, roads, etc. are all new and in fantastic shape.
*Campsites are outfitted with a nice tent pad, fire ring on a fire brick/cement pad, picnic table, and individual bear box.
*The actual camping area of each site is flat with clean gravel.
*One camp site designated for handicapped access has a paved parking pad and is barrier-free from the site to the bath house, which also has handicapped access showers and toilets.
*Nice camp host.

Pros or cons (depends on your preference):

*Some sites are screened from others by trees, and some sites are more open.
*The sites are really variable in how steep a slope it is from the parking spaces to the actual camping site. (The site marked for handicapped access is one of a few with flat entry, though.) All of the ones with slopes have cement stairs with handrails.
*The newness makes it feel pretty tamed or manufactured. (For example, some slopes are still covered in erosion control fiber until the vegetation grows in.) This could be a plus for new or reluctant campers.

*Despite the State Park's being centered on the lake--and most of its attractions relating to being on or near the water--there is no access from this camping area to the lake (or even a mountain stream.) Even the official hiking trail that goes around this part of the park is up quite a slope from the lake. (People have, of course, made unofficial trails through the woods to the shore.)
*You have to drive out to put a canoe or kayak in the water or to go to the swimming area in the other section of the park.
*There is no open space or playground for little kids to run and play, so they tend to play in the road.

Still, a very good addition to Lake James State Park and the NC State Park System.
