Well, I read a lot of reviews online that listed no hot water, padlocks on the doors, terrible smells, holes in walls...
The hotel is under renovation. Apparently slowly. We had hot water, but if we turned on any amount of cold water, it turned to all cold. Our toilet backed up and we were quickly brought a plunger to take care of the problem, then instructed to just set it in the hallway when we were done (ugh).
Our electronic key card lock worked fine, but there were definite holes where the aforementioned padlock hasps had been.
There was evident water damage and holes in walls (both repaired and unrepaired).
No unexpected or unaccounted for smells.
This establishment has inside-entry rooms, but every exterior door in the place was propped open all day and all night.
We (couple, teenager and two dogs) found the room to be run down and dingy but comfortable. This was just a place to keep our stuff and sleep, and did that job fine.
We have stayed in much cleaner and well-maintained properties for much less per night.
If this property were at a lower price point, it might be forgivable. We stayed because it was convenient to places we were visiting and has a liberal pet policy (not a lot of places take even well-behaved 100-lb. dogs).
The pool was damaged in Hurricane Florence (as was much of the hotel, I'm sure). It was not working at the time of our stay.
