If you are headed near Lake Mattamuskeet, your lodging options are limited. We choose the Hotel Engelhard as it was the cheapest of the three options within 20 miles of the lake. Not sure it was the best choice.
Light sleepers will have problems unless they bring ear plugs. Walls are paper thin and ANY noise outside the room can be easily heard, including the rooster some blocks away that started crowing around 4:30am. Also the in-room heater/air conditioner seemed way too loud, and it was rather chilly this weekend so it ran quite a bit even when room temp was set to 62.
Our room was very small. And what made it seem even smaller, was the lack of hangers or even a hook in the bathroom. Only one side of the bed had a nightstand, and the only light switch in the room was by the room door. No in-room coffee maker or hair dryer or iron. Not sure the floors are vacuumed regularly, did not look like it.
Staff was very nice and helpful, and the attached restaraunt did serve a very good breakfast (not included in room price) at a reasonable cost.
Next visit to the area will try a different lodging choice.
