This is the only restaurant in this chain we've visited, but it's certainly a great place for a burger. You walk up and place your order including all the toppings you want with your burger. The fries are hot and plentiful. As a unique touch in this particular franchise, you can also get a hand-spun shake or a beer from Appalacian Mountian Brewery. Outside seating is available which is a good choice in warm weather.

We eat at Five Guys pretty regularly; their burgers are always good. I always get a Little burger, as the regular ones are huge (and they cost more)! The best thing about this Five Guys in particular is that they now serve local brews. I'm so happy they decided to carry AMB! Way to go guys!

If you've eaten Five Guys, then you know the deal. If you haven't, stop reading and go find the nearest FG and gorge out on some burger goodness that'll make you hate yourself for every Whopper and Big Mac you've wasted your time (and money) on.

This place serves beer. And, it goes so well with dem burgers.

If you are hungry for hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken, or milk shakes along Boone’s Blowing Rock Road two excellent choices are within a hundred yards of each other: Five Guys Burgers and Fries and Come Back Shack. Each is just down the hill from the Shadowline Shopping Center and offers ample parking in the rear. Since they opened within a year or two of each other, Boone residents and visitors have had two fine establishments to choose from. Given they are so close to one another and are open the same hours (11:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m.) they offer a natural contrast to eating at a national chain and a local business.

Since it’s beginnings in Arlington, VA in 1986 Five Guys has spread across the United States and Canada with additional franchises in the UK an the United Arab Emirates. Offering high quality sandwiches and excellent fries all cooked to order Five Guys has succeeded by continuing to offer high quality food and friendly competent service staff while growing exponentially. They are known for using fresh ingredients and even post in each store where the potatoes used for the each day’s fries were grown. Five Guys represents a fine example of how a successful model for informal food can be expanded worldwide without losing the qualities that first made it popular. When the Boone franchise opened many loyal fans were pleased to now have one locally.

Ah, but Boone has had a local burger joint with similar food since 2011 when Steven and Scott Prewitt, who grew up in Boone, opened their Come Back Shack. Steven’s able wife, Janie, also serves as one of the mangers. All food here is also cooked to order and offered by competent staff in an attractive building with a unique, even funky, style. The menu options at Come Back Shack are more varied than at Five Guys and the visual decor is much more relaxed than the urban signature white and red tiles Five Guys is known for. The drive-through option at Come Back Shack is popular and traffic backups are generally rare even along Boone’s most congested thoroughfare. The Pruett’s had ample experience in casual dinning through work with franchised shops before beginning their own, which may say a lot about how a local business can still being doing well after Five Guys moved in down the street.

How to choose between the two restaurants? Taste is unlikely to offer a useful way to differentiate them. Each is excellent. Convenience is also unlikely to offer much of an advantage to one over the other. Each offers call in, take out, and sit-down options but only Come Back Shack has drive-through. Service is as quick at each place as it can be when all food is made to order. Blowing Rock Rd. traffic is sometimes a problem for all businesses along Boone’s strip but each of these places has a side road for access as well as from Blowing Rock proper and each offers a way to return to Blowing Rock Rd. using a stoplight. Choosing between Five Guys and Come Back Shack may come down to personal preference for atmosphere and whether one wishes to support a well-run local franchise that is part of a world-wide empire or a local business managed every day by it’s owners, one of whom shows up early every day to prepare the day’s operation and another is there at in the evening to clean up.

Their tasty burgers with lots of free topping choices are not your typical fast food burgers. Generous orders of fries are served - as many in the bottom of the bag as you find in the serving cup. Free soda refills. Allergy alert: peanuts in the shell are available right inside the door.
