We attended a wedding at the Westbury Manor. Living in this area, we are sure to attend a wedding at a locale owned by one of the several Scotto brothers. Their establishments were always the grandest and most lovely catering halls. This old manor needs some attention. It just seems tired and worn out.
We found the food to range from disappointing to average to very tasty. The cocktail hour was a disappointment, skirt steak cut into minuscule threads, pasta with broccoli and sausage that was lacking both broccoli and sausage. Wherever did they find sausage that small? Chicken Asiago prepared with cheaper dark meat. Cocktail franks cut into thirds and crab cakes lacking crab meat. The cheese cubes were not freshly cut and had a dried out appearance. The champagne display ran out of champagne.
The five course meal was an improvement. Antipasti of roasted vegetables with a slice of mozzarella was very good. The salad course was also very good, a Caesar dressing in a tossed salad. The pasta course of penne a la vodka was excellent. The pasta was cooked to el dente perfection and the vodka sauce was tasty and plentiful. Of the 7 selections, most ordered the filet mignon and most at the table had no complaints. The pork chop was not enjoyed by a guest as he felt it was too dry. My salmon had to return to the kitchen as the center was raw, this was done quickly, without complaint and returned to me cooked perfectly.
The wedding cake itself was bland but the Viennese tables, laden with cookies, ice cream with toppings, pastries, cordials, a chocolate fountain and layer cakes was indeed impressive. As we departed the ballroom, we were offered coffee, hot chocolate or hot cider and a little sack of fried doughnuts to return home with. Extremely nice touch to end the evening.
I struggled between rating the venue "average" to "very good". I settled on average because for the price the bride and groom paid for the reception, this could have been much better.
