On Sunday night I went out to Salt for dinner with a friend of mine, we were immediately seated (we had made reservations) and given water and menus. The selection is wonderful - I had a very difficult time deciding on what to order! The eye filet won out in the end, which my friend and I both had. It came promptly, and was cooked to perfection - absolutely delicious.
The service was incredible with friendly staff, the environment great and the food exceptional. I appreciate this as I am a Whitianga local and unfortunately the town is lacking quality in the restaurant department. I plan to highly recommend Salt as a restaurant to dine in.

“Great location, ambience, food and service”
Reviewed 31 January 2012

Hard to find a better location than Salt, right on the water. Loved the decor and the music being played - created a welcoming and relaxed ambiance. Found the service excellent, but not intrusive. We shared a delicious pate for starters, and my steak was cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend Salt, and look forward to returning when next I visit Whitianga.

“Salt might be popular but...”
Reviewed 20 January 2012

It seemed that the whole town appeared to be dining out at Salt when we came to visit. Even though it was a Tuesday night, booking is still essential as we found out to our cost. We arrived at 7.30 but it was 9 o'clock before we sat down to eat as the waitress had forgotten that we were still waiting at the bar.
We came to Salt three years ago when we enjoyed a first class dining experience. Noticeably there have been some changes but not all for the better. We had come to Salt looking forward to eating the local fresh fish so it was rather disappointing to hear that this was off the menu (something about a road accident with the fish truck - Mill Rd Bistro gets it straight off the boat!).
I had to content myself with an underdone lamb on a bed of shallots that didn't really work. Neither of the other dishes ordered made much appeal either.
It felt as though Salt has lost its soul to the masses and as a result, the food has suffered. There are better food experiences to be found in town - just ask the locals.

Salt as you will notice from all the other reviews is a fantastic restaurant that everyone wants to dine at. We pride ourselves on fine food, outstanding atmosphere and making our customers the top priority. We pride ourselves on the consistency of food and service which hasn't changed in the last 5 years. Our professional staff would never leave a customer waiting unattended for 1.5 hours as claimed. Unfortunately due to the high volumes of fresh fish and seafood we use on a daily basis, we are unable to buy direct off the wharf as much smaller restaurants around town can do. Fish was unavailable on this night due to a road fatality on the outskirts of town preventing our fresh evening delivery getting through and staff explained this much differently than the reviewer stated. It is also interesting to note that the alpine marino lamb is not and would never be served with shallots (it's the 90 day grain fed eye fillet that comes with shallots), it comes hand-cut kumara chips, eggplant, tomato jam and aioli.
We at Salt will continue to provide a first class experience for locals, nationals and internationals and yes, do ask the locals.

“Good food (minus the slug) - but poor service”
Reviewed 13 January 2012

I would have agreed with the majority of reviews on here.... until half way through my salad I found a small slug. On the odd occasion this can happen, even in the best of places, but what surprised us was how the staff dealt with it - or didn't! The waitress said 'oh, the chef must not have washed it properly' and cleared our table... and that was it! The service continued to be poor, we had to wait too long to order coffee (it wasn't that busy), had to ask for sugar twice, and then we went inside to request the bill. The bill was full price, no mention of the slug or an apology. In fact the manager, who happened to be the one getting our bill, had not been told about it. When we informed her she was unapologetic and did not seem to care.

Not impressed with the staff at all - they could have made a small hiccup ok, but they chose to make it worse with a poor attitude in what is supposed to be a top class restaurant
