Our hotel recommended Lukmaan for some good local food, and they were absolutely correct!

We stuck to the vegetarian dishes, sharing four or five small curries/stews, some kachumbari, and rice. Along with two drinks each, the total price was less than USD10. My favourite was an absolutely delicious pea and coconut curry.

Agree with other reviews - it is busy, and you do have to queue - it's not the kind of place for a long, lazy lunch. But for very tasty food at a great price, you can't go wrong!

It's like a fast food restaurant! You join the queue and show what you want. The selection is voluminous - that's right, but they never have Kisamvu! Then you queue again to pay - others might be in front of you as they only want a drink. You have to check the prices they charge you VERY much as it's often wrong but the conveyor belt feeling might make you to move on as the cashier already looks at the next customer while he hands you your food. It's full, yes, coz everyone who brings in customers gets fed for free - so mainly there are white people eating and pay while the natives often don't need to pay! For a mzungu it seems cheap but it's not - it's better and cheaper at the street vendors! Additionally, when you have eaten at Lukmaan it is made clear to you that they need the space - so, LEAVE!

Lukmaan's is your best bet for eating real Zanzibari cuisine in a commercial (=accessible) setting. They've recently refurbished, with a more touristy vibe and a symbiotic relationship with the café next door... But the food is still good. It's essentially a lunch canteen-style place where you point at what you want at the counter. Mseto (a mix of rice and mung beans cooked in coconut) and pweza na nazi (octopus curry) are great options, but have a go at the various stews and mkate wa ufuta (puffy chewy flatbread with sesame seeds and, yes, coconut). If you order pweza, though, be prepared for jokes as it's supposed to be good for your "male strength".

Authentic, delicious and inexpensive. What more could you ask? It's cafeteria style, so you can take a look at what they're offering.
